Till the Reformation, singing was performed by trained choirs,
clergy in Latin (Gregorian chant, polyphone); the congregation was
mostly silent. Then came the shift – the congregation started to sing, in
their own languages. John Calvin (French, 1509-1564), wrote simple
melodies so that people could sing easily. Songs were also written to
teach and mind people of the Word of God; the focus was God.
