Networking is Not WORKING!

Listen Later

IS NETWORKING NOT WORKING?

In this episode…….. explores networking and the reasons it both works and doesn’t work depending on how you approach it and what you aim to gain from it.

If you want to understand more about how to make networking a successful and positive experience for yourself then listen in now.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Is networking not working?
  • There are lots of reasons for networking and everyone has their own reasons for attending networking events.

At networking events, there is a random mix of people in attendance and not all will be your target market or people you could partner with.  As a result, you can often have lots of random conversations.

These conversations can often feel contrived, and this is one of the reasons people can be put off these events and wonder why they attended in the first place.

    • There are too many attempts to sell at networking events and it makes it feel uncomfortable.
    • Some people are very set in their approach and at networking events will always try and pitch their business, but if they have a furniture business and you  have a block management business there will not necessarily be a business connection.

If you don’t share a business connection it could be an opportunity to practise your pitch. Ask prior to pitching so that the other person can offer constructive feedback.

People think that if they have spoken with someone it’s is always necessary to share details. This is not always worth doing. It is possible to have a conversation, but if your business interests are not at all connected it will not be necessary to share contact details.

      • When  you go to a networking event you need to be yourself.
      • You have to be yourself shamelessly, not worrying that you might not be liked. The most important thing is to be authentic.

If no likes you it doesn’t matter, you can’t bend and twist yourself at an event and then be completely different outside of it

        • Be creative about staying in touch
        • Most of time it’s about connections. You may connect with a person because you share the same approaches and thinking. These types of people can be worth staying in touch with and building relationships with.

          • How can I help you?
          • Businesswise you may not have any commonalities but you may be able to share an idea that can help someone else.

If you provide something of value to someone you don’t always get something direct back. You have to be prepared to give something away for free whether that’s time or ideas.

            BEST MOMENTS

‘First and foremost be yourself and don’t worry about what people think of you’

‘You don’t need peoples affirmation in that situation to feel good about yourself’

‘I’m sure you will have had those experiences’

‘There are people who are massive advocates of networking’

‘It’s a bit false and bit fake and that puts people off’

‘ That falseness is one of the reasons that networking is dead’

‘You walk out and put the business card in the bin’

‘Let’s be honest going to a network is a bit weird and strange for lots of people’

‘Stop trying to sell your service or product if there is no connect ‘

‘Business wise we might not be able to do anything but if we like each other I’ll be thinking how can I help them?’

            Host BIO
I don’t know how this works, but you’re here now listening (hopefully) about my exciting life, so I’m going to try and make this worth your while.
I never got inspired at school, I was too busy trying to impress my peers, chasing girls, and being a fool to get inspired. I rejected school.
But let me tell you something for free! That was a mistake! I spent the next 15 years in jobs I hated, with no direction, lacked purpose, and motivation for life.
Yes, big words, but that was me in a box. A slave to the system!
Fast forward to today, and well, I’m not sitting in my ivory tower or anything, but I love life and my career. Yeah, it’s both painful and exciting rolled and wrapped up into one giant subway, and who doesn’t love subway rite?
The point is, you only get one life, don’t waste it pursuing things you care nothing for, invest in YOURSELF and grow as a person, be the best YOU by putting YOU first!
