'Neurologically laughable': The new era of 'screenagers'

Listen Later

A global survey has revealed that Australian teens are spending an average of 49 hours a week on digital devices.

Nearly one in five spends at least 40 hours scrolling through social media or playing video games.

The 'Unplugged Psychologist', Brad Marshall, told Gary Hardgrave on 4BC Drive, "What we have to remember from parents here is this idea that our kids are supposed to learn how to self-regulate."

"Their technology use is neurologically laughable."

"What I'm saying is for parents, you wouldn't sit there and hope that your child can eat a healthy dinner if you let them pick what they're going to eat. This is a similar concept. You can't expect your average ten, 12, 14 year old to self-regulate," Mr Marshall continued.
