New Albany Presbyterian Church: Sunday Sermons

Solomon summarizes his entire message: Fear God in order to turn a vain life into a meaningful one.

Death is our most fearsome enemy, Yet Solomon tells us we live wisely if we keep it in view. This is because death-consciousness:

--Leads to valuing the good things in life

--Prevents us from arrogantly striving to achieve immortality

In Christ, we have more than Solomon had: assurance of resurrection after death.

The wise person understands life is full of incomplete information and unpredictability, and yet boldly risks even when the outcome is uncertain. This helps overcome our fear of failure and our quest to control, and it also frees us to risk for Jesus.

Solomon counsels us with practical wisdom for a dangerous and difficult world.

We Christians can trust the sovereign God through tragedy and unpredictability, enjoying His gifts and hoping in the Resurrection.

In a difficult and confusing world, wisdom helps tremendously, though it falls far short of grasping the incomprehensible plans of an infinitely awesome God. In the absence of total comprehension, we fear Him and enjoy His gifts on the way to the grave.

Today we learn that this paradoxical world has a big problem. We cannot deal with it by trusting in our own righteousness or caving in to wickedness. We must trust in the wise One who made us and saves us.

God gives good gifts to people for them to enjoy, but when those gifts, wealth in particular, become the center it ultimately consumes the person and they do not live the joy filled life that God desires for them. We will only find this contentment and satisfaction by using these gifts to glorify Him.

We learn that God alone is worthy of our total and complete worship. We must approach the God who saved us with reverent fear by listening first, speaking little and keeping promises always.
