Sermon Notes:
“Define yourself radically as one beloved by God. This is the true self. Every other identity is illusion.”
― Brennan Manning, Abba's Child: The Cry of the Heart for Intimate Belonging
Matthew 18:15-20
Forgiveness does not mean:
- sin does not matter.
- we condone sin or ignore sin.
- we do not confront sin.
1. Forgiveness has to do with the past.
2. Reconciliation has to do with the present.
3. Trust has to do with the future.
Confrontation is the loving, caring thing to do.
The ability to manage conflict reveals the health of our hearts before God and the health of our relationship with others.
Fear of:
- losing the relationship
- an angry response
- hurting the person
- being perceived as mean, bad, self-righteous, legalistic
Confrontation should be motivated by love and the desire for reconciliation.
Wrong motivation:
- trying to fix or change the person
- exact revenge or punishment
- to control or manipulate
Preparing for the conversation:
1. come from a place of being forgiven
2. offer your perspective
3. ask questions, don’t make accusations
4. listen to the person’s heart and appeal to a pure conscience
5. seek the Lord together
a) based on mutual relationship with the Lord
b) based on mutual respect for the Word
Living out of being loved and living into loving, trusting, growing relationships.
Good relationships take courage, honesty, transparency, and sacrifice.
The Gospel declares:
Everything God does is for relationship!
Relationships are worth it!
