Northern suburbs beachgoers are about to become more identifiable with new warning signs along the coastline to improve emergency response times.

City of Stirling mayor Mark Irwin told Liam Bartlett on 6PR Mornings the activation of 73 Beach Emergency Signs (BEN) along a 7km stretch of coastline from Peasholm Dog Beach to Watermans Bay was championed by Rick Gerring, whose brother Ben was fatally attacked by a shark on Falcon Beach in 2016.

Irwin said the signs aim to reduce risk of confusion and delays in emergency response times on WA beaches, with each red and green sign having a unique code linked to coordinates for its location as well as the address and nearest intersection. 

"When you've got busy beaches and busy carparks and emergency services trying to find the right one, to have that GPS location [will aid response times)," he said.
