Human beings long for justice, but tainted by sin, that longing often becomes hate-fueled vengeance. David experienced this dynamic when he was insulted by a man named Nabal, and almost did something he would regret. But God sent Abigail to stop him and remind him of God's promises to him. In 1 Samuel 25, we are reminded that David was not a perfect King – but that we need a better King who can perfectly enact both justice and mercy, and who overcomes evil with good.

On the run and in a cave, David is presented with a prime opportunity to kill Saul. But instead of killing Saul, David decides to entrust himself to God and wait on his timing to ascend to the throne. Pastor Trey McClain preaches a message called "Lessons from the Cave" from 1 Samuel 24.

In 1 Samuel 19, Saul's murderous intentions against David are no longer a secret and David is forced to flee. From this time on, he will live as an exile until he comes to the throne. Peter described the Christian life as the life of an exile. Since our citizenship is in heaven, all those in Christ live as exiles on this earth. The prophet Samuel, whom God used to establish the kingship in Israel and anoint King David, had a godly mother. Hannah, who was barren, prayed to the Lord and God gave her Samuel.
