This first century biography shows us how God became the Servant King and is establishing His kingdom on earth — all through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. Mark’s story of Jesus is deeply shaped by the exodus event of the Jewish people when God rescued them from bondage in Egypt. Jesus saw what He was doing as the new and final exodus for God’s people. This means that Jesus delivers his people out of bondage and into freedom, He is reveals who God truly is, and He leads us on the way to the Promised Land.

Over the next few weeks we are going to try to get a big picture look at how this story unfolded and where we fit into it. Our theme is “Rest in the Shadows” - in this theme we will see a double meaning to “shadows.” On the one hand the shadows represent the darkness and difficulty we face in the story of God, but on the other hand we find in the shadows the presence of the One who will one day banish all darkness from our lives. The season of Advent is a time where we reflect on the coming of Jesus to the world. Jesus said that His coming was spoken of in the Old Testament: the Law, the Prophets, and the Psalms. We looked last week at how the “Law,” the first five books of the Bible, prepared us for the coming of the offspring of a woman, a king, who would reverse the effects of the curse and our rebellion. This week we will look at the “Prophets,” and we will see that we really do need a King. However, we don’t need just any king, but God’s chosen and anointed King. We invite you to come see how the Prophets prepare us for a King who rules unlike any other King - Jesus!
