Outline:
THE CONCEPT OF SHOWING RESPECT
Phil.2:3-4
THE CAUTION IN SHOWING RESPECT
Mark 7:6-8 & 2 Tim. 3:14-17
THE CATEGORIES FOR SHOWING RESPECT
A. The way of respect:
1. In our speech (Prov.15:23; 16:21-24); to Christians (Eph.4:15, 29); non-Christians (1 Pet.3:15; Col.4:5-6).
2. Through our actions (Luke 14:8, 10).
3. With our outward physical appearance (1 Tim.2:9; Deut.22:5; 1 Cor. 11:1-16).
4. With our wealth and possessions (Prov. 3:9; 11:1; 20:23). God is to be respected first with our resources; others are to be respected by using our resources fairly with them.
B. The who of respect:
1. Every human (Psa.8:5; Rom.12:10; Gal.6:10; Eph.6:2; Phil.2:29; 1Pet.2:17).
2. Those who disagree with us (Rom.14:12-13).
3.Those who are rude, and do not show respect back to us (Rom.12:17, 21).
4. Those who are seemingly less gifted (1Cor.12:23-24).
5. The elderly (Lev.19:32; Deut.28:50; Prov.20:29).
6. Those in authority (parents, husbands, church officers, civil rulers.
7. Women (Exod.21:22-25; Gen.2:18,20)
8. Those with godly character and are wise (Prov. 3:35); humble (Prov.15:33, 22:4, 29:23); peaceable and not quarrelsome (Prov.20:3); and righteous (Prov.21:21; 1 Thess. 4:4; Prov.11:16)
9. God ordained institutions: marriage, the sanctuary and the Sabbath
10. God himself (Psa.50:15;1Tim.1:17; Heb.2:9; Rev.4:11; 5:12-13; 7:12).
