At the center of Woke thinking is critical theory. So, what is it? In short, critical theory is a tool for delegitimizing a real thing for not being some kind of sociopolitical ideal thing that cannot even exist. The way it works is by holding the real thing up to the standards of an imaginary ideal rather than against the contingencies of reality and criticizing it with the aim of breaking people's faith in it, simply for existing in reality. It's a wicked tool almost always used to undermine something legitimate so that something illegitimate can replace it (dialectics). Over the last few years, much has been said about the "motte and bailey" rhetorical strategy, which is a dishonest way in which postmodernist, Woke, and other manipulative people argue. First described by Nicholas Shackel in a 2005 paper, "On the Vacuity of Postmodern Methodology," it has become a standard explanation for the Woke era in the last few years. Saving American Liberty, Session 4

What does "Woke" mean? James Lindsay, founder of New Discourses, says it is an awakening to a "sociognostic" belief structure. What is that, and how does it manifest in different contexts? In this third talk from the Saving American Liberty learning seminar in Dallas, Texas, hosted by New Discourses on August 22-23, 2025, Lindsay explains the concept in considerable detail. He also applies it to the "20th century" (or, Modernist) mode of thinking to reveal that two forms of Woke sociognosticism appear in that context: Communism on the Woke Left and Fascism as a form of Reaction on the Woke Right. Saving American Liberty, Session 3

What are "Left" and "Right," politically? Where does political extremism come from, on both sides? These are crucially important questions in our present era of extreme polarization that only seems to be increasing past any sense of a possible limit. To address these questions in a deep and fresh way, from August 22-23, 2025, in Dallas, Texas, New Discourses was proud to host a learning seminar event called Saving American Liberty, featuring talks from New Discourses founder James Lindsay and the founder of Sovereign Nations and New Discourses partner, Michael O'Fallon.

In this third talk of the seminar, Lindsay puts some foundation under the confusing terms "Left" and "Right," which have strayed quite a bit from their origins in the French Revolution. He then explains a second dimension of political orientation as being located in metaphysical realism versus idealism. Using the metaphor of a pair of scales, or a balance, he makes a case for a healthy politics, Left and Right, as compared to pathological, extremist politics, Left and Right, that seek to destroy everything from their idealist mania. There are several differences between the Left and the Right on ideological, philosophical, and political grounds, but in plain practical terms, there's another obvious difference. The Left has radicalized in a way conservatives have not, and in proportions that conservatives have not. Why is that? The answer is that the Left has succumbed to the blinding temptation for power far more than the rest of us have, and it has driven them mad. The thing is, while radicalism and political violence are not (at present) "both sides" problems, temptation is a both-sides problem. The friend-enemy distinction as a criterion of politics tempts us too, and we must continue to choose to reject it, or we will lose this most important distinction between Left and Right. What was the underlying structure of politics in the Third Reich, and what bearing did this view of politics have on the unfolding Nazi Experiment?
