Don't get me wrong, I would have said 90% of the same stuff about why DPA's are bad. But I wanted to look at the bigger picture of what we need to do to deal with corporations when they commit really extreme, deadly crimes like this. Are they gonna like being handed down life sentences for getting people killed? No. Do I care? Not even remotely. Maybe if they start getting held accountable for their crimes in court, we'll stop laughing when they get Luigi'd in the street.

In our final installment of our Special Report about the death of UnitedHealth Insurance CEO Brian Thompson, we explore why insurance doesn't just fail to contain costs, they actually have every incentive to let healthcare costs rise out of control. And then we pivot back to the more political questions at the heart of all this. Why don't politicians or any of the other big corporations do something about the most rogue and abrasive industry on the block? The short answer is, they have class solidarity with each other, and if we want to reach a point where we can do something about these parasites, we're gonna have to show some class solidarity of our own.

Welcome back to Coconut Trees! On episode one, we covered Liberalism, the Great Depression, and the New Deal. Then in episode two, we tracked backwards a bit to get some more context about "populism", and talked about how the abolition movement was one of the first political movements in the US based on real mass appeal and not just the interests of the rich. So on episode three, we pick things up in the Gilded Age and look at how the parties had leveled out before FDR's populist New Deal took off during the Great Depression, and how the shifts and schisms within the parties in the mid-20th century led directly to the neo-liberal era we're in now.
