New Geechee Podcast

It’s the second week of Black History Month and we’re taking our conversation from romantic love to one YMPs love for his hometown- Wilmington, North Carolina- aka Port City!

Meet Cedric Harrison-  a father, a leader, the Founder of Support the Port Foundation, a non profit organization that aims to enhance, cultivate and provide a renewed sense of community ownership and excellence for underserved communities. This would then lead him to become a TedX speaker, the first recipient of the Z Smith Reynolds All4NC Fellowship, and so much more!

I had to find out what inspired Cedric to leave it all behind to start Support the Port…..

It’s storytime! Cedric takes us on the voyage from poverty to empowerment, as he takes some of the most defining moments of his youth and embarks on a journey towards fulfillment! You know, a life that he could trulyyyyy say he loved!

From death threats to theatre, from college to unemployment, and from DC to Atlanta and back to Wilmington, Cedric’s story is met with many challenges where he has  to make decision after decision after decision….

What ultimately would guide him began with a local tour that educated him of the POWER that was Wilmington pre 1898… and he tells us the story of the ONLY over throw of government that happened in United States history- right in Wilmington NC!

This conversation is not only educational but serves as reminder that the challenges we face can shape the way we see and can impact the world!

Here’s the triumphant story of where Cedric has been and where he is headed…

Welcome to February- the month of LOVE and Black History! We will travel across the diaspora and document the journeys of people across even more cultural borders. You may remember two years ago we launched the 8 Shades of Melanin…. you can expect that same energy this Black History Month!

Today we get a special episode with a woman I affectionately call “the Love Guru”- Ms Kanu Jacobsen, host of Real Love Real Stories podcast and the creator of the new Black Woman’s Advantage ecourse.

Kanu’s journey begins in the motherland with a family who valued love and education. Upon moving to the States, Kanu’s journey with love began. From marriage to failed online dating attempts, Kanu was ready to throw in the towel, until…..

Her people watching turned into a podcast! She gained the courage to capture the love stories of people she saw in coffee shops, and learned a few things that gave her the HOPE to keep love in sight!

In today’s episode we are going deep into what is love, the importance of love languages, what its like navigating the world as a black woman and being categorized as “angry black woman” or a “Strong black woman”…. and the importance of knowing yourself in your pursuit of love!

Regardless of who you are and where you are from— you will feel the love in this episode!

Here’s the love journey of where Kanu is headed and where she is going…..

This January, I wanted to make sure I set the tone for the year. This is my year of alignment and audacity, and I want the same for each of you!

Today’s episode is a huge honor and privilege because I get to interview a YMP who has pioneered the path of indie interviewing podcasts by a woman of color.

Meet the Chief Dream Driver- Rana Campbell of the Dreams in Drive Podcast.

Just 4 years ago, on January 1st, Rana went out of park, and went into drive towards her podcasting dreams!

The Jamaican American, Princeton graduate has always had a love of storytelling and since her childhood has had the hustle of a lion!

With more than 200 episodes, and more than 150 dynamic guests, Rana’s sharp interviewing skills, pristine producing, and masterful marketing, has earned the podcast nearly ONE MILLION DOWNLOADS.

Dreams in Drive has been featured on the Apple Podast homepage over 7 times, featured in Essence, Entrepreneur and has been featured on a host of many other podcasts and lists of top podcasts to listen to!

In the midst of all of her achievement, Rana never misses the opportunity to share with us her personal dream driving story filled with its own twists turns and moments where she’s just figuring it out.

I think the world agrees that if you’re listening, you are absolutely learning from Rana.

What brings us here today, is I needed to know why she is so adamant, so dedicated, to determined to share these stories, and has dropped a new episode week after week over 4 years?

Here’s the dream driving journey of where Rana is headed and where she is doing….

Finding our voice. Living on purpose. Celebrating wins. Experiencing great loss. Career detours. Navigating relationships. These are just a few things we talked about that every YMP is going to experience in their lifetime.

Today’s episode we get to talk with two incredible women that use their gifts to help people like you and me, take our visions and bring them to fruition. They hold a special place in my heart because at the top of the 2010 decade, we met and have been able to grow together personally and professionally. They are my sisters. They are my accountability partners.

Daphnie Glenn, previously on Episode 13, is a speaker and author of two children’s books and is the incredible brainchild behind a new series of Writers Block Masterclass and Jasamine Hill, previously on Episode 31, is an author, blogger, speaker and coach at TheFearHurdler.com.
