New Hope PDX

We will journey to Easter by exploring Jesus through the eyes of Luke. Luke presents Jesus as someone who turns everything and everyone upside-down and inside-down. We cannot encounter Jesus and stay the same. Our message this morning will be lead by Pastor John Rosensteel and our scripture reading is Luke 5:27-32.

If this is your first time joining us, welcome! We're excited to share our Sunday service with you online. We believe that a weekly rhythm of gathering with other followers of Jesus is a key component of doing life together - and we want to gather with you on Sundays! We invite you to join us next weekend in-person, at 9:15am or 11am.

This week we continue in our series on Luke’s Gospel with a special, experiential service led by New Hope’s Beloved Community. Pastor Denise Douglas will lead a teaching before handing off to Beloved Community members: Erika Preuitt and Andrea Cook for an introduction to Othering.

Today's scripture reading is Luke 4:14-30.

If you'd like to take next steps, we have 10-week small group series called The Colossian Way. Starting February 23, this small group will meet with the goal of building a capacity for working on important questions in a way that reflects faithful obedience to Christ. We may not have agreement on "the answer" to the controversies we face, but together we will develop habits for reflecting Jesus in a truer and more beautiful way. Register Today

We’re in the second week of our series Luke’s Gospel: The Great reversal. We will journey to Easter by exploring Jesus through the eyes of Luke. Luke presents Jesus as someone who turns everything and everyone upside-down and inside-down. We cannot encounter Jesus and stay the same. Pastor John Rosensteel will lead this morning's teaching and our scripture reading is Luke 1:26-38.

I’d like to take a moment to share a quick note about our annual Advent Offering that you, New Hope’s congregation, contributed to in December 2021. Our goal was to raise $24,000 to be used to support the caregivers in our local community. Unsurprisingly, you all stepped up to the challenge, but you took it even further. You generously gave $32,000 to New Hope’s initiative, that’s $8,000 more dollars than we could have dreamed of sharing. We the staff are honored by the generosity that you continue to show, and that goes beyond just financial generosity. From all of us and from the recipients of your donations, thank you! You made a difference in the lives of many.

We cherish this time of year where the church across the globe anticipates celebrating the birth of Christ. Advent creates space within the hustle and bustle of the holiday season to reflect on the grace and miracle of Jesus’ birth, and connect with what it means for us today.

Following a shorter teaching from Pastor John Rosensteel, you’ll have the opportunity to participate in guided prayer lead by our Prayer Pastor in Residence, Jess Anders. I’ll be reading prompts to guide you through 10-minutes of reflection.

In the final week of our teaching series The Good Life, Pastor John Rosensteel will be exploring how the gospel relates to death. We want to take a moment to recognize that this topic may be hitting some sensitive spaces in your heart and mind. If you need help, know that you are not alone. The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is a hotline for individuals in crisis. To speak with a certified listener, call tel:1-800-273-8255

Death is not what God intended for us. Death makes God angry because death is an enemy. But early on in our story we also understand that death might be friendly. God intended humanity to die so that they could be raised to life forever breaking the power of sin and death. Our scripture reading for the day is Philippians 1:18-24.

Next Sunday marks the start of the Advent season. This year we have some special opportunities to "Look to Jesus" together through what we’re calling “Experiential Sundays”: Each Sunday we will explore a different aspect of Jesus as expressed in the book of Isaiah by singing together, engaging with a teaching, and practicing communion. There will be some different elements too. Visit www.newhopepdx.org/advent to learn more.
