New Website Challenges "Cancer Alley" Reputation

Listen Later

David Cresson, Executive Director of the Louisiana Chemical Association (LCA), joined the show to discuss the launch of LouisianaHealthFacts.com, a data-driven website aimed at debunking the long-standing “Cancer Alley” narrative. The site compiles health data from credible sources like the CDC, National Cancer Institute, and Louisiana Tumor Registry to compare health outcomes between industrial and non-industrial parishes across the state.

Contrary to popular belief, the data shows that industrial parishes—those along the Mississippi River corridor and areas like Calcasieu Parish—actually have better health outcomes than non-industrial ones. Cancer incidence is 5.5% lower, lung cancer rates are 20% lower, and cancer mortality is 7% lower in industrial areas. These regions also report longer life expectancy, lower rates of diabetes, obesity, smoking, food insecurity, and poverty.

Cresson attributes these outcomes to the presence of industry, which provides stable employment, health insurance, and access to early screenings and quality healthcare. He emphasizes that while some parishes do face health challenges, it’s misleading to blame industry alone without considering other factors like lifestyle, genetics, and socioeconomic conditions.

The term “Cancer Alley,” though catchy, has been scientifically debunked since the 1990s. Yet it persists in public discourse, often driven by misinformation or oversimplified narratives. Cresson encourages listeners to explore the website and examine the data themselves.

The conversation also touched on employment trends, showing higher job rates in industrial corridors and lower rates in regions with less industry, such as the northern Delta. Ultimately, the message is clear: industry contributes positively to both economic and health outcomes in Louisiana, and the facts support a more nuanced understanding of the state's public health landscape.
