Dr. Harold Bays is a giant in the field of obesity medicine, endocrinology, and cardiometabolic health. Luckily for us working in these fields, he chose medicine over stand-up comedy when he reached a critical fork in the road. Karli and Dr. Bays discuss the evolution of obesity medicine and obesity pharmacotherapy, the importance of body composition analysis, the limitations of BMI, and where the field of obesity medicine is headed.
Dr. Harold Bays is the Medical Director and president of the Louisville Metabolic and Atherosclerosis Research Center and has served as an investigator for over 500 clinical trials. Dr. Bays is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Endocrinology. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Obesity Medicine, and a Diplomate of the American Board of Clinical Lipidology.
Dr. Bays is also the editor in chief of the Obesity Medicine Association’s Medical journal: Obesity Pillars, and has been heavily involved with the Obesity Algorithm since 2013. He is also the Chief Science Officer and co-host of the Obesity, a disease Podcast for OMA.
In 2005, Dr. Bays was the first to describe and publish how “sick fat” (adiposopathy) contributes to metabolic disease, and among his awards include the 2015 National Lipid Association “President’s Service Award” and the 2016 Obesity Medicine Association “Obesity Medicine Clinician of the Year.”
