We discuss what the immigration community should know about the Executive Orders the Trump Administration issued on January 25 and the ICE raids that have followed. City Bar President Bret Parker spoke with City Bar Justice Center attorneys Danny Alicea and Laura Berger.

This three hour training on professional responsibility will look at three primary areas of legal services practice - limited scope representation, group representation and the unique ethical issues that come up when working with non-lawyer professionals such as social workers, case managers and physicians. The material will be suitable for new lawyers, as well as more experienced advocates whose work is affected by newer models of service. There will be an opportunity to examine case problems and ask questions of the panelists.

Allegations of parental alienation in custody/visitation cases in which one parent alleges domestic violence are commonplace and impactful. Often a parent alleging domestic violence is accused of being an alienating parent, and the domestic violence allegations are portrayed as fabrications deliberately concocted to exclude the other parent from the child or children’s lives. This panel explored the history of “parental alienation syndrome,” its relation to the unfriendly parent standard in the best interest of the child determination, actual cases in which charges of parental allegation have been levied, relevant psychological and psychiatric research, and ways in which attorneys representing victims of domestic violence can best respond to such charges.

This program will explain the impact of ratification of the Hague Convention by the United States on current practices under Articles 8 and 9 the Uniform Commercial Code. In the last ten years 13 hospitals have shuttered their doors in New York City. Meanwhile outpatient care continues to grow at rapid rates. There are many reasons for this change including the use of new technologies, better prescription medications, improved case management, and reforms to inpatient reimbursement. Yet sufficient resources have not been deployed to address the growing need for outpatient care. The first panel discusses the technological, legal, and labor challenges of transitioning from inpatient to outpatient treatment. The second panel identifies alternative vehicles to finance the capital infrastructure.

New York voters have a big decision to make this November – whether to vote for or against convening a constitutional convention to examine the New York State Constitution. For many New Yorkers, this will be their first time seeing a constitutional convention question on the ballot; others may remember being asked that question in 1997 because in New York, every 20 years, the voters get to decide if a convention should be held. A yes vote would lead to an election for delegates in 2018 for a convention that would convene in April 2019. The delegates at that convention can debate whether New York’s Constitution—the document that determines the structure of New York State government and the rights of its citizens—should be changed.

This event will focus on the pros and cons of holding a convention and will feature panels of experts in areas including, among other topics, government ethics, LGBTQ rights, education, social welfare, and the judiciary.
