  • The Texas redistricting is "perfectly legitimate and not discriminatory"
Texas Republicans launched a redistricting effort after pressure from President Donald Trump, who demanded state leaders redraw the map to help Republicans maintain their slim House majority ahead of a potentially difficult midterm election. In response, more than 50 Democrats left the state Sunday afternoon so the Texas House would not have a quorum (the number of lawmakers needed to consider and pass legislation under chamber rules), aiming to halt all legislative activity for the remainder of the special session slated to end later this month. As a result of that, Governor Greg Abbott informed Texas House Democrats that he would attempt to have them removed from office if they do not return to Austin to pass the GOP’s proposed new congressional maps. Now, Democrats in New York and California are drawing up plans to retaliate, but they face legal hurdles. Hans von Spakovsky, Senior Legal Fellow at the Heritage Foundation, joins Newell to talk about the situation.
