Louisiana lawmakers demand change after an investigation exposed what they call a flaw in a state law that’s meant to prevent racial profiling during traffic stops. The investigation showed that the law allows police officers to label only race, not ethnicity, on traffic tickets. That means drivers are often labeled as black or white, even if they don’t identify that way. Louisiana State Representative C. Denise Marcelle co-authored the law and said the goal was to identify and stop racial profiling. “What I wanted to accomplish was to get the data and to make sure that everybody was being treated fairly,” Marcelle said. Marcelle said after seeing these findings, she’d like ethnicity collection to be included in the law as well. Rep. Marcelle joins Newell to talk about it.
