This morning, I am beginning a new sermon series that I am calling “Meeting Jesus.” Throughout this summer, we will be looking through the gospel of John at various interactions that people had with Jesus in order to learn about Jesus and about ourselves. My hope and prayer is that as we look at these stories, that you will grow in your faith in and love for Jesus and that you would know better what it means to know and follow God.

This morning, we are in the eighth and final week of our sermon series through the New Testament book of 1 Peter, a letter written by the apostle Peter, one of the early church leaders, to a group of Christians scattered throughout Asia Minor, which is modern-day Turkey. I have entitled this sermon series “Stranger,” because one of the main themes throughout this letter is that those of us who believe in Jesus are citizens of heaven, living here as strangers or resident aliens. Our primary identity, values, and hope are not given to us by the culture in which we live but are found in heaven. This letter has been mainly to encourage these Christians to remain faithful and trust in God as they go through times of suffering. This morning, we will be in 1 Peter 5:

This morning, I am taking a break from my sermon series through 1 Peter to look at Acts 2 and what is known as the Day of Pentecost, a holiday we celebrate today. In Acts 1, we read about how Jesus, after rising from the dead, spent 40 days in Jerusalem teaching his disciples about the kingdom of God before He ascended to heaven. Because Jesus ascended he is sovereign over this world, prays for us to the Father, and, as we will look at today, has sent His Holy Spirit to live inside of every believer, so that we can have God living in us at all times. As Jesus said in John 14:16-17 - And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever--  17 the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you

This morning, we are in the third week of our sermon series through the New Testament book of 1 Peter, a letter written by the apostle Peter, one of the early church leaders, to a group of Christians scattered throughout Asia Minor, which is modern-day Turkey. I have entitled this sermon series “Stranger,” because one of the main themes throughout this letter is that those of us who believe in Jesus are citizens of heaven, living here as strangers or resident aliens. As we learned last week, God calls us to be holy as he is holy, which means to be set apart to belong to Him and to be used by Him for His purposes.

Last week, I began a new sermon series that I have called “Stranger,” which will be going through the New Testament book 1 Peter. 1 Peter is a letter written by the apostle Peter to churches in Asia Minor, part of modern-day Turkey. The title of my sermon series is a reference to a theme that is found throughout the letter, that for those who believe in Jesus, this world is not our home, but that we are citizens of heaven. And therefore, we must learn to live in this world as strangers, resident aliens, living here but not finding our identity or hope here or conforming to the values of the culture. This morning, we will read 1:13 – 2:10, paying special attention to the call to be holy. The passage begins with a “therefore”; in the letters, you will always find indicative followed by imperative – first, what God has done and who we are in Christ, followed by how we are then to live. It’s very important to follow that order, for it isn’t our good behavior that makes us acceptable to God, but God saves us, and then we respond in obedience to Him.
