Hier is het nieuws voor dinsdag 4 augustus 2026. We beginnen met het conflict in Oekraïne. Russische troepen gebruiken glijbommen tegen Oekraïense steden. Hierdoor wordt het geweld erger. Een aanval op de stad Zaporizhzhia in het zuiden heeft één persoon gedood en meer dan 30 gewonden veroorzaakt. Oekraïne reageert met drone-aanvallen op Rusland. Deze aanvallen hebben een olieraffinaderij en een pakhuis in brand gestoken.
Over de Verenigde Staten: bosbranden zorgen voor problemen rond Spokane, Washington. Drie grote branden hebben ongeveer 65.000 mensen gedwongen hun huizen te verlaten. In het congrescentrum van Spokane is een noodopvangcentrum geopend. Maandagavond zochten ongeveer 400 mensen daar een veilig onderkomen. Het Federal Emergency Management Agency heeft geld vrijgemaakt om de brandweer te helpen.
Verder in het nieuws: een nieuwe technologische ontwikkeling is gemaakt door Skunk Works van Lockheed Martin. Samen met een school van de Amerikaanse luchtmacht hebben ze laten zien dat kunstmatige intelligentie een straaljager kan besturen. Met een X-62 VISTA-vliegtuig deed de AI 27 luchtintercepties tijdens acht vluchten. Deze test laat zien dat autonome vliegtuigtechnologie vooruitgaat.
In de wetenschap is er nieuw onderzoek gedaan met oude gegevens van NASA’s Spirit-rover. Dit levert nieuwe inzichten op in de geschiedenis van water op Mars. De gegevens, verzameld in de Gusev-krater, lieten kristallijn hematiet en omgezet magnetiet zien. Dit betekent dat er op veel plaatsen op Mars chemische processen waren die met water te maken hadden.
En tot slot, in een lichtere wetenschappelijke ontdekking, hebben wetenschappers een interessant fossiel gevonden. Het fossiel is 518 miljoen jaar oud en laat de oorsprong van spinnentanden zien. Het is gevonden in Chengjiang, Zuid-China, en komt van een oud zeedier genaamd Urokodia. Zijn tangachtige ledematen zijn vroege vormen van de giftanden van moderne spinachtigen.

Hier is het nieuws van maandag 3 augustus 2026. In Oekraïne hebben Russische troepen de stad Zaporizhzhia aangevallen. Zondag gebruikten ze geleide luchtbommen. Minstens 12 mensen raakten gewond. Een hotel en andere civiele gebouwen raakten beschadigd. Dit past bij de trend dat Rusland sterke bommen gebruikt tegen Oekraïne.
Nu economisch nieuws: de groei van de Amerikaanse economie is in het tweede kwartaal vertraagd. Het Bureau of Economic Analysis zei dat de economie met 1,4 procent groeide per jaar. In het eerste kwartaal was dit 3,1 procent. De vertraging komt door minder investeringen van bedrijven, minder export en minder overheidsuitgaven.
In milieunieuws: een studie van het Potsdam Institute zegt dat de aarde sneller opwarmt. Tussen 2010 en 2023 warmde de aarde 0,27 graden Celsius per tien jaar op. Tussen 1970 en 2014 was dit 0,18 graden Celsius. Deze cijfers komen uit vijf grote temperatuurstudies. Dit betekent dat klimaatverandering sneller gaat.
In de technologiesector zijn er dit jaar veel meer ontslagen. Uit cijfers van de site Layoffs punt ef wai ai blijkt dat meer dan 124.000 mensen hun baan verloren. Dit was tussen januari en juli 2026. Dat is meer dan in heel 2025. Grote bedrijven zoals Oracle, Amazon, Dell en Meta ontsloegen mensen. Tegelijk investeren ze meer in kunstmatige intelligentie.
In ruimtenieuws: schimmels kunnen helpen planten te laten groeien op de Maan en Mars. Uit een studie blijkt dat bepaalde schimmels planten beter laten groeien. Sla groeide 70 procent beter op Marsgrond met deze schimmels. Dit kan belangrijk zijn voor landbouw op andere planeten.
