Welcome to the special issue of READY Publication. In October of 2019, the publication was officially passed down from me to my daughter and her millennial team. A few months later the world was hit with a pandemic which none of us ever thought we would experience in our lifetime.
 
Shelter-in-place orders were implemented, organizations sent employees home to work remotely, students transitioned to online school, and lives were lost around the world due to COVID-19.
 
READY paused its publication with the intent of returning in 4-6 months once life returned to normal, however as we all have collectively learned, COVID changed the definition of normal.
 

I encourage you to read each article within the covers of this magazine. The writers went deep and shared from their place of passion, expertise, and education. You will notice one article that was submitted by an anonymous author. I pray they will see this note of thanks as I am sure it was difficult for them to write their words on paper for many to see and read. State Rep. Dontavius Jarrells is currently serving his first term in the Ohio General Assembly and is running for re-election in House District 1, which includes Berwick, Bexley, Bronzeville, Downtown, Franklinton, German Village, Milo-Grogan, and the South Side of Columbus.

Growing up in the Hough neighborhood of Cleveland, Rep. Jarrells saw firsthand the lack of affordable housing, safety, education, employment, and other essential services on families. After nearly a decade fighting for disadvantaged and marginalized communities across Ohio, Rep. Jarrells is committed to advancing commonsense legislation to make Ohio a better place to live, work, go to school, start a business and raise a family. During his first term in elected office, Rep. Jarrells introduced legislation to increase Ohio’s minimum wage to $15/hr., eliminate discriminatory covenants from deeds during property transfers, remove derogatory language within the state’s code, and brought millions back into the district and Franklin County.

The Power of Canvassing

Canvassing is a practice that has been around for many years and is used by political organizations, non-profit groups, and many others to connect with people individually. The method of canvassing is widely used because it delivers excellent returns. With the team of volunteers, organization, onboarding, training, contact lists, and follow-through on contacts made, canvassing can be one of your most successful outreach tools.

Canvassing, can allow for: 

• The community to learn about local, state, and national issues affecting them.
• The opportunity to share information about upcoming town hall meetings, elections, specific candidates, runoff elections, special elections, issues on the ballots, and other political events.
• The possibility for activism and grass-root organizing to help inform people interested in becoming a part of civic engagement. 
• Community action visibility on the local level.
• Petitions to be circulated in a short time.

Many great conversations can come from canvassing, from raising many vital questions to constituents and potential constituents sharing these questions and discovering their answers through networking and town hall meetings. 

Elections are more than going to your polling location on the day of the elections or if you vote early. Responsible voting includes:

• Researching each candidate.
• Attending town hall meetings.
• Asking the necessary questions.
• Being open to listening to the conversations and getting involved in the election process as a volunteer. 

The last weekend in September and the first weekend in October are essential for the November 8, 2022, election. Anyone in politics will share with you that it is the final weekend to have the opportunity to get people to support your candidate. After the first weekend of October, campaigns focus more on getting the people they have already spoken to show up and vote.

Power the Polls is a first-of-its-kind, nonpartisan initiative for recruiting poll workers to ensure a safe and fair election for all.

There are over 5,000 local election jurisdictions in the country - and becoming a poll worker is a little different in each place.

Power the Polls was launched in June 2020 by a coalition of businesses and nonprofits seeking to recruit a new wave of poll workers ahead of the 2020 election. America was in the midst of a nationwide poll worker shortage, and the consequences had already been felt in primary elections with reduced polling locations, long lines, and voters waiting to cast their ballot for several hours. In the era of uncertainty caused by the coronavirus, fewer poll workers were signing up for the job.

Power the Polls had an original goal of recruiting 250,000 new prospective poll workers. In less than 100 days, Power the Polls harnessed the energy of individuals interested in ensuring a fair and safe election, recruiting over 700,000 prospective poll workers across the United States. Consequently, the shortages we saw during the 2020 primaries were limited in the general election: little to no poll worker shortages were reported during states’ early voting period and on Tuesday, November 3, 2020.

They are already seeing the need for large scale poll worker recruitment in 2022. Poll worker shortages have already affected voters this year, as polling places in some states across the country have closed due to shortages during primary elections.

When polling places close, it becomes more difficult for voters to access the ballot box. That’s why Power the Polls is continuing its work to recruit a new generation of poll workers who can ensure safe and fair access to the ballot box in 2022 and in elections to come.

Power the Polls relies on objective data about poll worker requirements and applications collected from over 5,000 jurisdictions assembled by the non-partisan Fair Elections Center. Information is available on poll worker compensation, hours, application links, and training and voter registration requirements.

There is a question that always exists in our community when dealing with the current landscape of our nation, world, and environment at large. What the hell is going on? All you need to do to discover the answer is examine the manner by which people are functioning with one another daily. We are witnessing individuals in positions of power constantly taking full privilege of creating greater distance between the disenfranchised and benefactors of systemic inequity. Hell has taken for residence right here on earth.

Many people are struggling to find their place in this world of constant turmoil. Some individuals have given up on the prospect of a world that can be brand new. People have dismissed the hope of possibly experiencing equality and equity in their day. It is challenging to look around and see what needs to be changed, while looking within and asking yourself if you have what it takes to make an impact on this environment.

Advocacy is defined as any action that speaks in favor of, recommends, argues for a cause, supports or defends, or pleads on behalf of others.  We live in a society that requires voices to speak for the voiceless. We need people that are driven by a vision where people no longer perish under the weight of injustice.
