March 10, 2020 COPEC contemplates court action if OMCs fail to reduce fuel prices
The Chamber of Petroleum Consumers Ghana (COPEC), says it will not rule out the possibility of going to court to compel Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) in the country to reduce fuel prices at the pumps.
The threat comes after a conflict over crude oil prices between Saudi Arabia and Russia pushed the global price of crude oil down by almost 30 percent, the lowest in four years
COPEC is demanding that OMCs also reduce their fuel prices in consonant with the deregulation policy which allows fuel stations to increase their prices when price goes up and vice versa.
The Executive Director of COPEC, Duncan Amoah, said he will be compelled to go to the court if OMCs do not reduce their fuel prices by end of this week.

March 10, 2020 NEPZA partners World Bank, IFC to develop trade zones
The Nigeria Export Processing Zones Authority said it had entered into partnership with the World Bank and the International Financial Corporation to develop infrastructure in the Free Trade Zones across the country.
The move, according to NEPZA will help to attract more foreign direct investments into the Nigerian economy. The NEPZA Acting Managing Director, Mr. Bitrus Dawuk, disclosed this when the World Bank and the International Financial Corporation delegation visited the authority’s Headquarters in Abuja.
Dawuk said one of the bottlenecks hindering the optimal performance of Free Trade Zones is NEPZA’s obsolete legislation that is in the process of being amended by the National Assembly. He said once the laws were amended, the Authority would be able of generating billions of dollars’ worth of investments into the country.

March 10, 2020 Currency in circulation dropped to N2.18tn in February
Currency in circulation dropped by N61bn from N2.24tn as of the end of January 2020 to N2.18tn at the end of February 29, 2020.
Latest figures obtained from the Central Bank of Nigeria on Monday revealed that the figure which stood at N2.05tn as of the end of October 2019 rose to N2.44tn at the end of December 2019.
The apex bank stated that the Currency-in-circulation at end-November 2019, rose by 9.9 per cent to N2.2tn, in contrast to the decline of 0.4 per cent at end of third quarter 2019.

The Federal Government is set to cut the country’s 2020 budget, Amid tumbling prices of crude oil
The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), will get a report on Tuesday (today) on what his regime can do to salvage the N10.59tn budget.
The budget review committee, which was set up by Buhari on Monday, is chaired by the Minister of Finance, Budget and Planning, Mrs Zainab Ahmed.
Its primary duty is to review the $57 oil benchmark for the budget and ultimately recommend an appropriate size, down from the current N10.59tn.

March 10, 2020 Stop abuse of Sanusi’s rights, CSO tells Buhari
A civil society organisation, the Concerned Nigerians Movement, has urged the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), to direct security agencies to respect the fundamental human rights of the deposed Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II.
This was contained in a letter addressed to the retired major general on Tuesday and signed by the convener of the group, Deji Adeyanju.
In the letter entitled, “Unlawful and unconstitutional arrest and detention of former Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi”, the group argued that Sanusi’s dethronement was unconstitutional, adding that his confinement was an infringement on his rights to liberty, peaceful assembly, and movement as enshrined in the constitution.

March 10, 2020 COVID-19: Second coronavirus patient transferred to Lagos
The Lagos State Government has said the patient, who recently tested positive for coronavirus, will be managed at the Biosecurity Facility of the Mainland Infectious Disease Hospital, Yaba.
Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, disclosed this in a press statement by the Lagos State Ministry of Health.
According to him, 40 persons had been in isolation at Lafarge health facility in Ewekoro in Ogun state since the confirmation of the index case.
Abayomi stated further that the second confirmed case of #COVID19 indicated the first person-to-person transmission in Nigeria.

Nigerian President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), has written to the House of Representatives to seek amendments to the Finance Act recently passed by the National Assembly.
The Speaker, Femi Gbajabiamila, read Buhari’s letter at the plenary on Tuesday, in which the President asked that the Act be amended to indicate that the new law took effect from February 1, 2020.
Another amendment is to indicate that the annual fees payable on basic good items are different from Valued Added Tax.

Oil prices plunged more than 30% after OPEC’s failure to strike a deal with its allies regarding production cuts caused Saudi Arabia to slash its prices as it reportedly gets set to ramp up production, leading to fears of an all-out price war.
U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude dropped 27.62% to $29.88 per barrel as of 06:33 GMT Monday, having earlier tumbled to a low of $27.34 per barrel. International benchmark Brent crude futures also plummeted 26.4% to $33.32 per barrel. Brent futures were down more than 30% at their lows.

The Nigerian equities market had defied the impact of the COVID-19 and expectations that the market may take further hit following the fears arising from the disease.
At close of trading last weekend, activities on the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) took a positive turn, rising by 0.24 percent on the back of bargain hunting on banking stocks, mirroring the mixed performance across other major markets
At the end of the week, performances across global stocks were largely mixed as stocks in the US Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) and S&P 500 Index closed higher at 0.6 percent and 0.2 percent respectively; European Euro Stoxx and FTSE were down 3.4 percent and 1.8 per cent respectively, while Japanese Nikkei 225 also recorded weekly loss, falling by 1.9 percent.
