Jesus offers a radically inclusive invitation to anyone and everyone to be His disciple. Our job is to spread the news to those whom God has strategically and supernaturally placed in our lives that they are also invited to “see” and “hear” Jesus and follow Him as their rabbi.

This Summer, NewSong Church wants to be All in. All In with God, with one another and with our community, our neighbors, and co-workers, so that they can be All In with Jesus. The majority of the letters in the New Testament were written to communities. The few that were written to individuals were intended to help the recipients to understand, create and protect the new forms of community that the followers of Jesus were engaging in before a watching world. Paul's letter to Philemon is no exception. His message is clear: The grace, love, and peace of Christ had challenged and removed all that separated people from one another, particularly the possession and use of power. Today, it begins with me, and I have a real choice.

How to live the best kind of life is a question that has preoccupied human beings for millennia. There have been many answers suggested by philosophers and religious traditions. When Jesus was asked this question he pointed to the vertical and horizontal relationships of love for God and others: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind, and love your neighbor as yourself.” (Luke 10: 27). In our modern spiritual landscape, the question of who exactly God is may be contested. Even if we can possibly find common ground on that subject, the question, "who is my neighbor?" remains a vital one to answer if we are to be the kind of community that brings salvation and healing to this world. Jesus’ perspective on this question, controversial in his day, still is today.

The Holy Spirit uses the Gospel to change people, to draw them towards God and to shape and mold them into conformity to, enjoyment of and fruitfulness for the Kingdom of God. Do we who claim to follow Christ sometimes live as if the gospel is only for those who don’t yet follow Jesus? Perhaps we need to consider again the magnificent message of the Good News of Jesus and to hear and respond to it in all of its richness and power. (Colossians 1:15-23)

Last week we explored some sources of confidence for us as we serve Jesus in our community. The first is that the Holy Spirit is already at work in the world, in people’s lives, institutions and cultures. This week we will explore some ideas about how we might learn to see Him at work in order that we might join him there.
