McKernan's first win in 1986 was notable for its split vote, with McKernan securing 39.9%, James Tierney 30.2%, Sherry Huber 15.1%, and John Minario 14.9%. The 1986 election paralleled the current midterm, with Reagan's second term facing fatigue and the Iran-Contra scandal.
