SHOW NOTES:
In this week’s podcast, we invited Dr. Yara Demo to a conversation about marriage and relationships. We talk about what makes relationships healthy and unhealthy, and how challenging romantic relationships can be for a physician.
-- Highlights from the conversation:
DR YARA DEMO
● Practicing Neurologist, Physician Life Coach, Mother and Wife.
● Burnout, living intentionally, relationships coach
● Thriving and empowered after burnout
MARRIAGE AND RELATIONSHIPS
● It’s very easy for us to take the people that are close to us, and our relationships, for granted. Friends, family, romantic relationships.
● For a couple, is necesssary that both try to see things from the other’s perspective. This is necessary to start building tolerance, consideration, and respect. Mutual respect is imperative.
● Watching out language is something we should work on. Not only verbally, but also physically. The unconscious mind can make us react on a way that we are not aware of, and still hurt our partner with words or gestures.
● It’s important to accept that we all have different ways of thinking and working towards mutual goals. Without recognizing this, we have the risk of thinking that the other person isn’t making enough of an effort. This also leads to taking misunderstandings or “signals” as evidence of what we think in a stubborn way.
● When both partners are physicians, it’s a bit more probable for them to mutually understand the time commitment, the struggle, and the stress involved in doing the job. Shared experiences allow couples to rely on each other after being on call for 24 hours or after losing a patient, because they both know how that feels. One down-side of a physician couple is that usually, it’s one of them who takes the lead role in the home administration and/or child care. This can be a lot for someone who has a busy schedule, and may cause some friction with the partner who isn’t participating as much. Balance is key.
● In a non-physician male and physician female household, there can be a reversal of the roles (the socially expected ones) that can create a lot of struggle However, this depends on the couple’s mindset.
● A couple is always in development. There are several phases to go through. And the more time passes, the more challenges will be phased. We should keep present that it’s ok to change, but also to be open to the other person changing. An open mind and comprehension can go a long way.

SHOW NOTES:
This week Dr. Drummond and I discuss what it's like to be an entrepreneur in the middle of the pandemic we are going through, and how to think of your business and yourself during these difficult times.
Highlights from the conversation:
DR DIKE DRUMMOND
● Mayo trained family doctor, professional coach, author, speaker, and trainer.
● CEO and Founder of TheHappyMD.com
● Over 3000 hours of one-on-one physician coaching, training over 40,000 doctors
● Dr. Drummond started blogging about physician’s burnout. Being one of the pioneers in the topic, he was able to work together with hospitals and other organizations to help address burnout in the medical field, especially on live events.. With COVID-19, 80% of his business disappeared.
BEING AN ENTREPRENEUR IN COVID-19 TIMES
● Adapting is crucial. Switching to a virtual platform and reinventing channels of communication allowed Dr. Drummond to stay afloat.
● Some of us don’t just tolerate a job. We don’t want just a job, but more. Some of us want to break free from regular practice and pursue something with purpose, and create with it a revenue.
● After the COVID-19 outbreak, a lot of physicians decided to switch to a virtual business, telemedicine, and teleconsulting. Looking for a niche can be overwhelming, but you must focus on something that you are truly and deeply passionate about. You can do “wound” working, investigating and working on your own “wounds” (or problems), and share that solution with an audience.
● The reason to go for what you really care about or what “hurts” you, is that you have an insight view that’s very much needed when you want to capture an audience (and potential clients). People will invest in content they can relate to.
● A tip: Find what works on the people you are targeting, research, and try to see if it works. If it does, hold on to it. Do try improving content and ideas, but don’t steer too far away from what’s working. People can get tired of new wording and concepts (or even don;t understand them), and they will always go back to the basics, to what’s familiar to them.
● Trial and error will be necessary. Success in the first try is extremely rare, so don’t be disappointed or scared to fail and try again. If a project didn’t go as planned, it’s because of a marketing failure, a financial failure, and administrative failure, etc… Not because you are a failure. Take the learning experience and keep going.
● You can use the situation brought to us by COVID-19 as an opportunity to go for that business idea you’ve been thinking about. However, take your steps carefully and keep present that you may still have responsibilities to take care of.

SHOW NOTES:
This week next level entrepreneur and I took the conversation to another level as we chatted about empowering our Latina Women Physicians
Highlights from the conversation:
Dr. Ursula Lang
● MD, PhD. Board Certified in both Anatomic Pathology and Dermatopathology
● Dedicated to helping Latina physicians and scientists through Latina Docs Podcast (with Dr. Vanessa Calderon)
● Immersed in coaching for the last four years, with over 1,000 hours of training and experience
● Loving wife, mother of two beautiful children, and fierce friend
The importance of representation and empowerment
● Nobody else has the same combination of experiences, positions, connections. This uniqueness can be turned into a contribution and example for those that have similarities in one or more aspects with us, but can’t find them in mainstream media.
● Representation can give us perspective. Different parties voicing what they need and how they live their lives provides strength and value to the group they represent.
● It’s important to have people in your life you can go to or look up to, that can remind you who you are why you are doing what you're doing.
● Representation is part of a bigger machine. There are people in the front lines (that show up in manifestations, attacking the root of the problem, being extremely vocal), and behind them are those who empower them, and lift them up when they are burning down.
● Creativity is one of the roots of empowerment. Without it, so many tools (such as podcasts, coaching programs, videos, guides, etc) wouldn’t be available. These tools expand our minds and provide us with an impulse to look for better solutions.
● Someone decided that one color of one skin or one race was superior to others, and this kept going for so many years. It keeps going. Latino people and black people can have internalized that without realizing. This can be stopped by honoring our cultures, which can only be noticed and displayed through empowerment and representation. Without clearly visualizing it, there’s no way to combat the idea of white supremacy.
● This also works in other aspects, such as gender discrimination.

SHOW NOTES:
This week next level entrepreneur and I took the conversation to another level as we chatted about
Highlights from the conversation:
Dr. Cherry Chen
● Founder of The Real State Physician
● Received her MD at Texas A&M College of Medicine with honors, and completed her training at Oregon Health & Science University.
● Author of “The Physician’s Definitive Guide to Real Estate Syndications”
Real Estate Syndication
● Syndication deals are usually for apartment complexes and storage buildings, because they will be shared with multiple families/parts.
● Syndication may take a bit longer than a solo investment, but it may be well worth it.
● Full-time physicians can have a hard time managing their investments due to lack of time, especially on real estate. When you talk about syndication, you can invest and have a stake in a property without having to go through the complicated process of managing it and maintaining it closely.
● Not only there's less investment in time, but also in the monetary aspect. There’s a bit less at stake.
● Basic money management is key. It’s important to stay informed and self-educate in this matter for any type of investment, and daily life in general.
● There’s a difference between crowdfunding platforms (sites that facilitate real estate connections and transactions, but don’t take place in the actual investment), and private syndication (in which you have a sponsor and there’s a team of people investing money, highly participating in the whole syndication process).
● Some things to have in consideration before jumping to the pool: Be 100% sure that you are investing your money in something you actually want to put your money in, check the situation of the market, check the background and experience of the people you’ll invest with.
● Rest assured, investing in properties - and real estate syndication - is not as difficult as it seems. You just need the correct guidance.

SHOW NOTES:
In a second episode, next level physician Dr. Pam Pappas and I took the conversation to another level once again as we went deeper about bringing the soul back into medicine and just how we begin to restore our souls as physicians & medical providers.
Highlights from the conversation:
Dr. Pamela Pappas
● Integrative psychiatrist. Personal and executive coach for physicians.
● Founder and CEO of Wholehearted Doctoring
● One fellowship in mental health services research, and another one in consultation liaison psychiatry. Bringing together mind and spirit.
● As a psychiatrist, and in her years as a coach, she has heard the following words coming from medical professionals too many times: “I feel like I've lost my soul.”
Doctors: What to do with the current ongoing trauma?
● We are in the middle of a disaster that’s not like any other disaster we’ve faced before. Usually, after a couple of days or weeks we are able to check the damages and rebuild. This is not the case. And if the perpetuity of this situation isn’t enough, there’s another factor that weighs into medical experts: They are constantly doubted. People say that what doctors do and say is a hoax, that numbers are inflated, that these are all lies. These are heavy things to carry on for a long time. An ongoing trauma.
● It’s important for doctors to strengthen their inner connection to not be washed away by ignorant and hurtful comments from people and the media. We are talking about relying on the spiritual side. (This is not necessarily about religion)
● It can be hard to help someone establish a relationship with their own emotions, especially if they are not used to it. Some even get to the point of dissociation (because with such an amount of stress, the mind needs some sort of escape).
How to reconnect to one’s soul?
● This is very individualized. Several factors are important. What’s your current way of life and what’s your ideal life? What gives you peace? What keeps you grounded? What brings you joy? What does it look, feel, smell, taste like?
● You probably already have what you need to head towards a connection with your spiritual side.
● Then, it’s all about willing to let yourself go of external factors that won’t nourish your internal values. Give yourself permission to slow down
● Give yourself permission to feel, to feel good.

Bringing the soul back in medicine
● As medical professionals, it can feel like we are not encouraged to take care of ourselves. Intellectual capacity, training, research, etc… if they are not fueledes by something deeper than just the intellectual, it can cause something inside us to break. It can feel like we are giving up on us, on our souls.
● To fully heal, it’s necessary a methodology and a pathway for understanding and living your authentic self. Personality patterns, soft spots, inner conflicts and frictions come into the mix and they shouldn’t be taken lightly or ignored.
● Moral injury is coming up more and more. Professionals are put in situations in which they can’t assist a patient the way they know in their soul and the way they have been trained.
● Few resources and staffing are recent problems that came up with the pandemic. These factors create a sensation of burnout and being left out by the system and their employers.

SHOW NOTES:
This week next level entrepreneur and I took the conversation to another level as we chatted about
Highlights from the conversation:
Dr. Sunny Smith
● Family doctor
● Owner of Empowering Women Physicians (empoweringwomenphysicians.com)
● Podcast and self help junkie!
● After a bike accident in Tahiti and losing funding for the free clinic she was running, she was forced to slow down and think about her current life. She started listening to a bunch of podcasts and that is where she discovered the LCS. Signing up to do her coach training led her to begin the community Empowering Women Physicians (which initially just started as a community) and soon she began being in demand as a coach.
● In a lot of ways, that bike accident set her on her path of purpose, and this is how it is in life many times. We are given hints and when we don't listen, we are given sometimes big and undeniable circumstances to make us slow down and see the opportunity for change.
Heading to New Directions
● We sometimes are bound by this thinking that we cannot have a career that goes our way... that we cannot do things like work part time schedules, shift careers, be entrepreneurs BECAUSE it's the way we were taught to think in med school and in a lot of ways it's still frowned on in our community.
● Doctors have a lot of authority and expertise, due to the dedication and hard work invested in our line of career. Same focus can be applied to other areas of our life, such as personal relationships, passions, solo ventures, etc. The only things stopping us are limiting beliefs (I don’t have time, I’m not good enough, not yet, etc.)
● It only takes one little adjustment and boom! You may be heading to a different direction, learning new skills. It can be scary because it feels like you are leaving accomplishments, studies, and a career path behind. But it’s quite the opposite. It’s about learning more.
● A lot of people feel like they have to do everything the cookie cutter way, with everything predetermined. What about charting your own path? Open up to the idea of a journey. Life has led you to where you are, so why turn back? You are supposed to go forwards.
● Even if you go back to the career path you originally were at, you will come back with new skills and experiences that will help you be better at what you resonate with the most. But you will be fine. Don’t sacrifice yourself forever. In order to know what you really want, you should go through multiple experiences. It’s the only way to avoid feeling trapped and stuck.
● Keep present that anything you do, matters. Use your voice, use your actions, contribute to the world in the ways you feel most helpful and comfortable with.

This week next level physician Dr. Stella Evans and I went deep today as we talked about being a mom of a special healthcare needs children.
Highlights from the conversation:
Dr. Stella Evans
● NLP practitioner
● Mother of an extra health care needs patient.
● Pediatrician (complex care pediatrics) in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
● Creator of a life coaching program for physician mothers of special needs children: Clarity Courage Compassion.
● NLP practitioner
Life Coaching for Parents of Kids with Special Healthcare Needs
● With all the pressures that come with life as a physician (especially during a pandemic), life in the family, and the added pressure of special healthcare, It’s important to give oneself the space to be human.
● Allow yourself to feel lost, sad, overwhelmed. Otherwise, suppressing those emotions will lead to secondary ones - like shame and anger - that won’t let you function well.
● In order to recognize the light, you need to know your inner darkness and dominate those feelings and move to action.
● When you disconnect yourself from your inner self, you are also disconnecting from your child. Kids are incredibly intuitive. Honoring our own emotions means honoring our children.
● The capacity for living your best life comes from the capacity of appreciating the person your child is, even when situations turn out to be hard. Inner balance is necessary to not let outside circumstances throw you out of your game.
● Try to evaluate if things that you add to your life are really worth it. Preserve what may be a delicate balance by itself. Can you fit more stuff without losing it?
