Moving Into a Dorm or Apartment? Here’s the
September Pest Checklist for Students
Alright, future scholars of UWM, Marquette, and MATC, listen up! Will White here from Nexus
Pest Solutions, and I know exactly what’s on your mind right now: packing, course schedules,
and maybe that killer welcome-week party. What’s probably NOT on your mind is an
unwelcome roommate with six legs or a furry tail. But trust me, as much as I love helping folks
get rid of pests, I love it even more when you don’t have them in the first place.
College move-in season is a whirlwind of excitement, new beginnings, and maybe a little bit of
nervous energy. You’re ready to dive into lectures, make new friends, and experience the
freedom of living on your own. What you’re definitely not signing up for is the stress of a bed
bug bite, a cockroach scuttling across your kitchen counter, or a mouse munching on your
late-night study snacks.
Pest issues can turn that excitement into a nightmare faster than you can say “organic
chemistry.” Whether you’re bunking up in a cozy dorm room or spreading out in your first
off-campus apartment, you’ve got to protect your space. Your peace of mind and, frankly,
your academic success, depend on it.
So, before you even unroll that futon or unpack your ramen noodle stash, let’s talk strategy.
This isn’t just about keeping creepy crawlies out; it’s about setting yourself up for a
successful, stress-free academic year. And I’m going to arm you with the ultimate September
Pest Checklist for Students.
The Uninvited Guests: Common Move-In Month Pests
Let’s get real. Certain pests are practically experts at crashing the college party. Here’s who
you need to be on the lookout for:
● Bed Bugs: These little vampires are the ultimate hitchhikers. They don’t care if you’re
moving into a brand-new apartment or an old dorm; if someone unknowingly brings them
in, they’re set. They often come in on used furniture, mattresses, or even secondhand
textbooks and clothing. They’re sneaky, nocturnal, and their bites are incredibly itchy
and annoying. Dealing with bed bugs is a massive headache, so preventing them is key.
● Cockroaches: Ah, the classic apartment dweller. Cockroaches love warm, humid
environments, and they thrive on crumbs, spills, and clutter. If you’re moving into an older
apartment building, there’s a higher chance they might already be present, lurking in the
walls or behind appliances. Even in newer places, they can sneak in through shared
plumbing or tiny cracks. They multiply fast, carry bacteria, and are just plain gross.
● Mice: These furry fiends are always on the hunt for food and shelter, especially as the
weather starts to cool down in late summer. They can squeeze through shockingly small
gaps – we’re talking dime-sized holes – to get indoors. Once inside, they’ll chew through
wires, contaminate food, and leave droppings all over your stuff. A mouse sighting is a
sure fire way to send shivers down anyone’s spine.
Your Pre-Move-In Pest Checklist: Act Like a Pro
Now, before you even bring in that first box, let’s make sure your new digs are pest-free. This
isn’t rocket science, but it requires a little bit of diligence.
1. Inspect Every Inch of Your Mattress (and any used furniture): If you’re bringing your
own mattress or buying a used one (or inheriting one from a previous tenant), this is
CRITICAL. Bed bugs love to hide in the seams, tufts, and tags of mattresses. Flip it over,
check both sides, and run your hand along every seam. Look for tiny reddish-brown
spots (fecal stains), shed skins, or the bugs themselves. Do the same for any upholstered
furniture – couches, chairs, etc. If it looks suspicious, don’t bring it in!
2. Scrutinize Cabinets, Closets, and Drawers: Before you put your clothes or food away,
open up every cabinet, drawer, and closet. Look for droppings (small, dark pellets that
look like black pepper or coffee grounds for roaches, or rice grains for mice), stains, or
odd smells. Pay special attention to the corners, crevices, and behind any built-in
shelving. This is especially important in kitchens and bathrooms.
3. Seal and Store Your Food Smartly: I know, I know, ramen and cereal are staples. But
even those need protection. Once you move in, make it a habit to keep all food,
especially open packages, in sealed, airtight containers. This isn’t just for snacks; it
includes pet food if you have a furry friend. This denies pests easy access to a food
source and sends them packing. This is even more important in shared kitchens –
communal spaces are breeding grounds for pests if not managed correctly.
4. Ask Your Landlord (or RA) About Recent Pest Control: Don’t be shy! Before you sign
that lease or grab those keys, ask if the unit or dorm building has had any recent pest
control treatments. A proactive landlord is a good landlord. If they say no, or seem
hesitant, that’s a bit of a red flag, but not necessarily a deal-breaker. It just means you
need to be extra vigilant with your own preventative measures.
