ROMANS 11:1-24
(Review Romans 10:18-21)
-Paul asks the question, "Did God reject his people?" Paul then uses himself as evidence that God hasn't rejected the Jews, because he himself is one.
-Verse 2 is often read out of context from Romans 11:1. Out of context, this verse appears to promote Calvinism, or God's election, but in context, Paul simply seems to be answering his question in verse 1, did God reject his people...and Paul answers this implying, "No, God didn't reject the people he foreknew," referring not to individuals but to the Jewish people as a whole.
-Paul then goes to prove this by reminding the Jews of God's faithfulness to Elijah when it had seemed like all were lost.
-In vs 5 the word "remnant" means "those who are left," meaning that not all bowed their knee to Baal, and that some still remained true to the Lord. Specifically he says it is a remnant chosen by grace...this is commonly believed to mean that "God chose the remnant" but this arguably carries a more modern theology into reading an old text. More than likely, this is referring to "the source of the election is God's grace, and not human will." This isn't a statement about predestination, but rather that it's God grace that saves, and not keeping of the law or some sort of effort on man's part.
-At first this passage seems to imply a deterministic perspective, but in 11:11-15, Paul reveals that this rejection of unbelieving Israel isn't permanent but that they haven't stumbled so far as to be recovered, ultimately leading to glory to God.
-Paul then turns to the Gentiles, telling them not to boast in their salvation, because if some of the Jews could be lost, then they should not become over confident in their position to think that they couldn't fall. This is perhaps the greatest evidence against the idea of "once saved always saved,"
-Paul in vs 23 then provides the missing lynch pin for the entire argument, he shows that the Jews fell away not because of God's determinism, but because of unbelief.

ROMANS 10:1-21 (starting in verse 9)
-Vs 3, Most people even today don't know there are TWO types of Righteous, by works and by grace through faith, as such, all are only trying to achieve salvation through works.
-Paul definitely says that "Christ is the end of the law." The word end in the Greek is "telos," which implies a "conclusion" or "act of termination." Paul makes it clear that this benefit is "for everyone who believes," and not a universal position for all (unbelievers).
-Paul goes on to contrast the keeping of the law (by works) and enjoying the benefits of righteous in Christ (through faith). One requires perpetual effort, and the other is by faith.
-Vs 5, Paul makes is implying that if we live by the law, we must also live with the consequences of the judgment that comes with it when we inevitably fall short.
-To fail to acknowledge righteousness through Christ, is to fail to accept that Christ died and is interceding on our behalf...it's to ignore the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus.
- Paul is quoting from Deuteronomy 30:11-14, if you just read that by itself, it would almost seem like Moses is saying that the Law is easy to keep, but Paul clarifies to say that Moses words were about the "word of faith" he was preaching. (vs 8)
-vs 9, Paul is stressing how simple it is to receive the life of faith. This doesn't mean just saying the words, like a incantation produces salvation, but a true heart felt response of faith in Christ's Lordship does. We call this "the confession of faith."
-Vs 11, "whosoever" or "anyone" makes it very clear that salvation is available to ALL people, regardless of position, race, or genealogy.
-Romans 10:14-15 show how important it is that WE go and preach the word to people...otherwise, how can they believe.
-Vs 16, Not all anointed messengers' words are accepted...often times they aren't...but we still go and we still preach - people's salvation is at stake.
-Vs 18-20, Paul is saying that Israel (of the OT) heard the message of faith righteousness and that it was made clear to them, but that out of disobedience, envy, and obstinance they refused to receive it.

ROMANS 9:1-33 (See also Exodus 9:13-17 and Jeremiah 18:1-6)
(Review) The Valentinian Myth (A Christian Gnostic Heresy, Valentinius AD 100- AD 160)
Early Christian Perspective on Romans 9
-Many of the most prominent Patristic thinkers (early church fathers), including Origen and Irenaeus held that Romans 9:6-13 was describing God's foreknowledge, rather than some form of deterministic work, meaning that God's election was based upon God's ability to see in advance man's faith and freewill, rather than God deciding for him.
-The fact that Paul expresses concern for his brothers and sisters here, yet provides that these same individuals have opportunity to return to Christ in Romans 11:23, provides further evidence that God's work here isn't deterministic.
-Calvin (and to some degree Luther), extrapolated on Augustine's strong teachings on grace (which was in contrast to Pelagianism/Salvation by merit), to use Romans 9 as evidence of God's sovereignty choice in salvation, rather than the will of man.
Commentary on Romans 9
-Paul introduces the idea of a true Israel, those that children of the promise or reckoned through Isaac (the child of the promise and a "type" of Christ.)
-Romans 9:12-13, see Genesis 25:23 and Malachi 1:2-3, two nations, Israel and Edom, written centuries after the boys deaths.
-The older (Israel) will serve the younger (Gentiles).
-Romans 9:15-18, see Exodus 33:19 and Exodus 9:13-17
-Because of depravity, there is an addition of mercy, rather than a subtraction of grace.
-Throughout the chapter, Paul compares the Jews/Israel first to Ishmael, then Esau, and finally Pharaoh, as a culmination of his teaching on faith righteousness, demonstrating that God is no respecter of persons - and that the true Israel is the one who comes to Christ through faith.
-Paul subtly references Jeremiah 18:1-6, regarding the Potter and the Clay. Notice that Jeremiah references not two lumps of clay, but 1 that was repurposed. This is what Christ did by "tearing down the temple and rebuilding it in 3 days".
-Shockingly, the "objects of his

Romans 8:1-17 NOTES
-Paul isn't saying that the Law is powerless, due to any intrinsic flaw in itself, but simply that our flesh prevented the law from doing what it was intended to do.
-Thankfully Paul reveals that what the Law couldn't do, Christ did on our behalf!
-In vs. 5-8 Paul makes it clear that the mind set on the flesh is death, but that the mind set on the Spirit is life.
-He then shows that as believers we are no longer controlled by the flesh, but rather live by the Spirit. This doesn't mean that the believer can't sin, but simply that SIN is no longer our ruler.
-Verse 11 is one of the most encouraging verses in the book of Romans and maybe the whole New Testament.
-A major misconception is that everyone is a "Child of God," but Paul states that only those who are led by the Spirit are "children of God."
-Paul reveals that if we have the Spirit of God in us, then we are his children, and if we ARE his children, then we are also co-heirs with Christ as a result.
