Sue Berman talks with rare book specialist Georgia Prince about the book Polychromatic Ornament by Auguste Racinet.
Auguste Racinet compiled this book full of examples of pattern and decoration as a practical tool for the new profession of designers emerging in the 19th century.
There are 100 lithographic plates, all printed with exceptional technical skill in vibrant colour, some including gold and silver highlights. The specimens come from many different cultures and historical periods, and from a wide variety of decorative arts.
This English edition followed the first French edition of 1869, with the plates printed in France. It is part of the collection donated to Auckland by 19th century entrepreneur and art collector James Tannock Mackelvie.
