An this introduction to the Wāhine Take Action exhibition lead curator Renee Orr talks with Sue Berman on the themes and thinking behind the celebrated exhibition that honours wāhine and Suffrage125.

Composed by Auckland pianist Louise Webster it was commissioned by Auckland Libraries in 2015 to acknowledge 10 years of lunchtime concerts. This final concert of the series aligns with the current

exhibition on the second floor gallery which honours women’s achievements in this year of celebrating 125 years of suffrage in New Zealand.

The Kotuku Quintet performs Amy Beach’s Quintet in f sharp minor, op. 67. Amy Beach became the first successful woman composer in America and “the most performed composer of her generation” devoting herself to concert tours, composing, and championing women composers.

In a programme highlighting talented singers, string and woodwind instrumentalists, the chamber orchestra Grammar Virtuosi and chamber choir Grammarphonics, Auckland Grammar School take us on a journey travelling through time and place. Featuring the music of the Italian baroque composer Arcangelo Corelli, Norwegian Nationalist Edvard Grieg, 20th century Brazillian Heitor Villa Lobos, and New Zealand composers Chris Adams and David Hamilton they move from the baroque period through to today to give a broad outline of our cultural heritage.

The Whekau Trio bring a thought provoking programme centred around New Zealand Composer, Philip Norman’s inspiring work “Plato’s Cave”. Composed especially for Mark Hobson, this work depicts the Shadows giving way to Light then the enlightening experience of Life beyond the cave.

This is contrasted with the work of another composer from the other side of the world, with Astor Piazzolla’s The four seasons of Buenos Aires.

This set of four separate tango compositions was originally scored for his quintet of violin (viola), piano, electric guitar, double bass and bandoneón.. The Whekau Trio have been together since early 2016, initially for a one-off performance, but now working more regularly in the chamber music

scene throughout New Zealand.
