Paul writes 2 Timothy from a place most of us can’t imagine: a Roman dungeon, cold, filthy, and closing in on execution. And yet his words don’t sound defeated. They sound steady. That’s what grabbed us and that’s what we want for our own lives when following Jesus gets costly, misunderstood, or lonely.
We camp out in 2 Timothy 1:11–12 and trace what we call two roots of gospel strength. First, we find courage by submitting to God’s purposes instead of trying to manufacture strength from personality, talent, or hustle. Paul wasn’t self-appointed. He was appointed by Christ, and that changes how we view calling, ministry, and even the hard seasons we’d never choose. Second, we find comfort in God’s unfailing power. Paul suffers “for this reason,” and he’s not ashamed because he knows whom he has believed and he’s convinced Jesus is able to guard what is entrusted to Him.
Along the way, we talk honestly about Christian suffering, spiritual warfare, and why trials can restrain sin, build endurance, advance the gospel, and shape us into better encouragers.
