The Australian musician Chet Faker is done with his artist name you guys.

Having operated for five years and having released an album Built On Glass in 2014, the Melbourne 28 year-old has announced he will revert to his more boring real birth cert name, Nick Murphy.

On Facebook he said:

“It’s been half a decade since I started releasing music as Chet Faker and all of you have been the driving force behind the music since. theres an evolution happening and I wanted to let you know where its going. the next record will be under my own name, Nick Murphy. Chet Faker will always be a part of the music. This is next.”

That was last week but I’m only one man and there’s lots of music and news and things to do out there so I only saw it now.

However, Murphy did debut a new track called ‘Fear Less’ on his new website, which is a bit of a banger indeed.

Yup.

I've made an Electric Picnic DJ Mix every year since 2008. It's always been a blast to make and a highlight of the site for me personally. 2016's mix features 22 artists on the Electric Picnic lineup over 20 songs in just under 55 minutes.

It's for bumping for your festival prep for the next week or in the car on the way down to Stradbally. Last year's mix.

I'm DJing at the Red Bull Tropical Garden at EP on Saturday from 6:30pm to 8:30pm.

Optimo Espacio was a Sunday night club in Glasgow that was the stuff of legend. The Sub Club-held night ran for 13 years and was run by DJs JD Twitch and Jonnie Wilkes who as well as having live acts like Grace Jones, Four Tet, LCD Soundsystem, ESG and more play, was notable for its eclectic tune selection that ran the gamut of electronic, post-punk, disco, lo-fi and rock. Basically, it serves as one of the main inspirations for our own Lumo in Dublin.

Optimogeddon was how the pair billed their last night on April 25 2010 and the night has gone down as one of the best clubbing experiences many in the room had and Rolling Stone even went as far as listing as one the 25 best internet  DJ mixes of all-time whatever that means. Read RA’s oral history for more.

The night ran for seven hours and the pair sent the club on a wild ride from downtempo curios and  personal favourites from Angelo Badalamenti, Suicide, Etta James and Nitty Gritty Dirt Band through an increased BPM that features LCD, the tune the club was named after by Liquid Liquid, disco (First Choice), pop (modern Madonna) and rock (Iggy Pop) through to the glorious final 90 minutes of all-sorts: Sparks, Westbam, Blondie, ‘Stand On The Word’, Fleetwood Mac and ‘Stand By Me’.

Of course, Optimo are very much relevant as producers and DJs these days but their club was a Scottish mainstay and one that reverberated and inspired many around the world (a comment from The Black Madonna I saw only yesterday prompted me to seek this out).

All seven hours are available in 5 parts thanks to many people before me.

The Nialler9 mix series has been long overdue. Each mix will feature a theme and will be put together by some of my favourite DJs local or international. For this inaugural mix, DJ Deece is warming up the series with a mix that is themed on tracks he would play to warm up the room. He says:

“I put this mix together with the theme of the warm up DJ set in mind. I do a lot of warming up for international acts in the city at the moment, which is something that I’ve really grown to love. It gives me a chance to play tracks that are more like actual songs, rather than just peak-time club bangers. You can give tracks room to breathe, and actually listen to what’s being played. I would usually do a longer warm up set than 1 hour, but I’ve tried to get as much of my warm up style across as possible in this mix. I think it’s important during that opening DJ set to create a few moments of higher intensity but then creatively bring it back down again. It builds the room nicely, and leaves the crowd wanting more when the headline DJ goes on, which they can then provide. It’s a really under appreciated thing; the warm up. I feel it’s a great skill to have, and something that all DJs should try and master the art of.”

DJ Deece is a resident at Somewhere Club? on Wednesday nights in the Workman’s Club, he is a resident with Hidden Agenda where he also runs the Deece Series which brings in an international guest to play with him. He can be found at most Irish festivals and also plays with Colin Perkins as Decent Perks.

Daire Carolan is the founder of the Dublin label First Second, he’s a DJ and he works with All City.  The next First Second 12″ is due out in the new year and will be distributed by Lobster Distribution. You can catch him supporting Helena Hauff, one of his picks below, this Saturday in the Buttoner. Here are his top ten tracks of the year.

1. Japan Blues – ‘Spurned My Colour’ (Berceuse Heroique)

‘Spurned My Colour’ by Japan Blues definitely sneaked into my top ten this year as it literally only came out a few weeks ago on Berceuse Heroique. Japan Blues is a project by Japanese record collecting expert Howard Williams. Known by some Londoner’s for working behind the desk at Honest Jon’s but known by others for putting some slick Japanese inspirational cuts together. I couldn’t really pick one tune out of his but this is the one that was playing when I wrote this. So definitely worth checking out all his stuff… aaannnd why not check out his All City mix why you are at.

2. Henry Wu – ‘Croydon Depot’ (Rhythm Section)

If you are a regular in All City records I’m sure you are very used to seeing a fine selection of Bradley Zero’s Rhythm Sections label in the shop. With solid releases from the likes of Al Dobson Jr, Prequel, Retiree, Choas in the CBD and more in the back catalogue it seems to have been a good year for them. For me personally, the Henry Wu that came out not too long ago is by the far the stand out. ‘Croydon Depot’ is just vibes, just a really nice swing to it or something.

3. Project Pablo – ‘Always’ (1080p)

Project Pablo is another one of the many artists popping out of Canada. There is so much good stuff coming out of there at the moment be it Pender Street Steppers, Jack J, Cloudface, Minimal Violence, Jock Club and so on. This record is definitely a perfect example of that. Having been originally released on tape then re-released on a 12” soon after , I Want To Believe is such an exceptional record but if I had to pick one tune on there it would have to be ‘Always’.

4. Herva – ‘Pressure Bumps’ (All City Records)

Herva has had one solid year for sure. After releasing How To Mind Your Own on All City at the start of the year he went on to release an album on Delsin,  do a few records on Bosconi, remix Nick Hoppner on Ostgut Ton and topped it all off with another album just out now on Planet Mu. The chap’s output is insane and I’ve a mad amount of respect for him. ‘Pressure Bumps’ is a driving broke up techno beat which definitely shows off Herva’s many talents as a producer and I’d highly recommend checking out that entire record.

5. Helena Hauff – ‘Spur’ (Werkdiscs)

Helena Hauff has gone from a residency at Hamburg’s Golden Pudel to being one of the most talked about DJs and producers in the underground electronic scene. ‘Spur’ is one of the hands down standout tracks on her debut album Discreet Desires which was out sometime in the Autumn on Actress’ Werkdiscs imprint. It kind of reminds of some very retro electro or something. Definitely been giving it the rinse in any of my sets as of late.
