People think being nice is enough because it’s the most socially acceptable substitute for holiness.
It lets you feel spiritual without surrender…
look righteous without transformation…
and avoid being cruel while staying unchallenged, unrepentant, and unchanged.
“I’m a good person” has become the modern-day fig leaf.
“I don’t bother anybody.”
“I’m kind.”
“I help people.”
And yes—that’s better than being cruel.
But here’s the truth:
👉 God never said niceness was the standard.
You can be nice and still be:
That’s why Scripture goes past behavior and straight to the heart:
“They honor me with their lips, but their heart is far from me.” — Matthew 15:8
