This week on Wellbeing we talk with Nick Martin, a Falklands War veteran with PTSD. Nick joined the British Navy in 1977 and when the Falkland Islands were invaded on April 1st 1982, he was soon deployed there. The Falklands War was a ten-week undeclared war between Argentina and the United Kingdom. Nick was serving on the Atlantic Conveyor. In May 1982, the ship was hit by two Argentine missiles causing Nick to suffer a fractured skull, broken jaw and dislocated shoulder as a result. However, it was the mental struggles that followed and the PTSD that affected him for the next 34 years that motivated him to seek help. Today, Nick is involved in Help For Heroes, a British charity which provides lifelong recovery support to British Armed Forces.
In this episode, Nick talks about his service in the Falklands War, the wartime experiences he had while there, how his Falklands experience affected him in the form of PTSD on his return, how his PTSD affected his relationships, his journey to getting help, and where he is at today in his PTSD journey.
"Its forty years ago now, and it has almost ruled my whole life. The PTSD that I finally got diagnosed about six or seven years ago, has ruled everything I did." - Nick Martin on this episode of Wellbeing
