NIEHS Superfund Research Program - Research Brief Podcasts episodes
- Arsenic in Drinking Water and Cancer in Uniquely Exposed Northern ChileFor the first time, findings by the University of California, Berkeley Superfund Research Program provide strong evidence in humans that ingested arsenic causes cancer in specific kidney and ureter cells, called transitional cells. Other recent findings from the group suggest that people exposed to both arsenic and other known or suspected carcinogens have very high risks of lung or bladder cancer.7 min
- Lead Discovered at Higher Levels Below the Soil SurfaceMeasuring lead soil contamination at the surface may miss higher concentrations just below the ground, according to a new study from the Brown University Superfund Research Program (SRP). Researchers analyzed hundreds of soil samples from residential properties around six water tower sites in southern Rhode Island and found that even when lead levels on the surface are low, concentrations can be greater at depths down to a foot.5 min
- Environmentally Persistent Free Radicals and Their Lifetime in Ambient Fine Particulate MatterFor the first time, an expansive study into the concentration and extended decay behaviors of environmentally persistent free radicals (EPFRs) in ambient fine particulate matter revealed the ways in which EPFRs decompose in the environment. EPFRs can cause cell damage and induce an inflammatory response, which can lead to a wide range of biological damage.6 min
- Commercial Paper and Rubber Products Contain Activators of the Aryl Hydrocarbon ReceptorCommon commercial and consumer products, including newspapers and rubber bands, contain chemicals that are recognized by the body as toxins, according to a collaborative study by researchers at the Duke University and University of California, Davis Superfund Research Program (SRP) Centers.6 min
- Effects of Cadmium and Copper on the Fish Olfactory SystemA series of studies from a research group led by University of Washington grantee Evan Gallagher, Ph.D., provides insight into the mechanisms underlying injury to the olfactory system of fish exposed to cadmium and copper, including concentrations seen in the environment.6 min
- Nicotine in Peppers and Other Vegetables May Reduce Parkinson Disease RiskEating nicotine-containing vegetables, mainly peppers, may provide a protective effect against Parkinson disease, according to new research from the University of Washington Superfund Research Program.6 min
- Remediation of PCB Contaminated Sediment by BioaugmentationA new way to reduce hazardous polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) by bioaugmentation, the addition of microorganisms to degrade contaminants, could be an effective and environmentally sustainable strategy to decrease the amount of PCBs in polluted sediment.5 min
- Novel Method Identifies Potential Key Pathway in Arsenic-Induced Birth DefectsBlocking the glucocorticoid receptor (GR) pathway in a chick embryo model prevents structural birth defects induced by arsenic.5 min
- Commonly Manufactured Nanomaterial Induces Neurovascular ToxicityNanoalumina, a widely manufactured nanomaterial, can accumulate in brain cells, inducing nerve and blood vessel damage and protein degradation in the brain.5 min
- Arsenic Uptake in Homegrown Vegetables from Mining-Affected SoilsArsenic uptake from soil into the edible portion of some plants presents a potential health hazard that may affect home gardeners near contaminated sites.5 min

network of university grants that seek solutions to the complex health and environmental issues associated with the nation's hazardous waste sites. The research conducted by the SRP is a coordinated effort with the Environmental Protection Agency, which is the federal entity charged with cleaning up the worst hazardous waste sites in the country.
