President assents to law Bill criminalising hate crimes, hate speech
President Cyril Ramaphosa has given his approval to the Preventing and Combating of Hate
Crimes and Hate Speech Bill, which criminalises hate crimes and hate speech. 
The law also outlines the prosecution process for individuals who perpetrate these offences.
“This legislative measure gives effect to South Africa’s obligations in terms of the Constitution
and international human rights instruments concerning racism, racial discrimination,
xenophobia and related intolerance, in accordance with international law obligations,” the
Presidency explained in a statement on Thursday.

South Africa’s Road Accident Fund being bled dry – this is who’s to blame

The Road Accident Fund’s (RAF) CEO Collins Letsoalo says the fund fears being bled dry by ‘suspicious, exorbitant’ claims – but the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) has pointed to multiple failures, including corruption.

The RAF, which recorded a R8.43 billion deficit for the 2022/23 financial year, recently revealed that it is struggling to get on top of mounting claims, recording a backlog of over 321,000 – largely due to missing supporting documents.

Letsoalo largely laid the blame for ailments in the fund’s fiscal position at the feet of non-South Africans for having “exorbitant” and “suspicious claims.”

The Khampepe Commission Judicial commission of enquiry headed by Judge Sisi Khampepe handed its report to the Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi yesterday. The commission heard testimony from witnesses and survivors where 77 people died.
