September 13, 2020 Jews in Comics with Arlen Schumer
Award-winning comic book-style illustrator and historian Arlen Schumer explores the specific Jewish creation of the American superhero and its antecedents in older, ancient myths—from Ben Grimm to the Golem—as well as the significant contributions Jews have made to the medium of comic book art itself. One day in 1933, newspaper publisher Max Gaines (nee Ginzburg) came up with a novel idea: he took some pages of his tabloid-sized Sunday newspaper comics, folded them over twice, and stapled them on the side—creating the comic book as we know it! That same year, two 18-year-old aspiring newspaper cartoonists from Cleveland, writer Jerry Siegel and artist Joe Shuster, created a character whom they hoped to sell to the very newspaper syndicates who worked with Gaines: Superman! And the rest, as they say, is history! Thus began the history of comic books and super heroes, largely created by American Jews like Gaines, Siegel and Shuster, for their innovations sparked a 20th Century American pop culture explosion that has only gained in prominence and stature here in the 21st Century! In essence, American Jews not only created the original superheroes—they created the American comic book itself!

The creator and head writer of The Twilight Zone, Rod Serling (1924-75), was a true visionary, a prescient prophet of the small screen, whose many Twilight Zone episodes dealt with the universal, timeless themes of isolation, loneliness, and solitude, which is why they are so timely for today’s existential epidemic of Covid-19. These Twilight Zone episodes will be discussed and analyzed by host and pop culture historian—and Twilight Zone scholar—Arlen Schumer, utilizing images and video clips culled from those pertinent episodes. He’ll be joined by fellow Twilight Zone authors Nicholas Parisi (Rod Serling: His Life, Work, and Imagination) and Koren Shadmi (Twilight Man).
ARLEN SCHUMER wrote and designed Visions from The Twilight Zone (Chronicle Books), the only coffee table art book based on the visual and verbal content of the legendary television series. Eric is the author of Caulerpa Conquest, A Biological Eradication on the California Coast, a children’s book titled, Peli Can Surf and has an animated TED video on the Caulerpa story. Eric’s Community Service includes president and board member of the Agua Hedionda Lagoon Foundation; board member of the California Shore and Beach Preservation Association and vice-president of the California Surf Museum. Eric is a lifelong surfer, world traveler and partner in the Palm Springs Surf Club in the Coachella Valley, California.

Irene Marie founded a successful international modeling and talent agency; received the Lifetime Achievement award in 2015 by the Film& Entertainment Council and awarded International Business Woman of the Year by the Woman in International Trade Organization. In addition, she partnered with MTV on the hit reality TV show, 8th & Ocean, and spearheaded the rebirth of South Miami Beach.
Simultaneously, she conducted an intense spiritual quest.
