Seeking a solution to the Eskom crisis, the African People's Convention (APC) will be embarking on countrywide protests to keep the matter in the public discourse and force changes in the power utility's leadership. The APC kickstarted its nationwide campaign on Wednesday at Eskom's Megawatt Park. Among its demands are that Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan, the Eskom board, and the management step down due to the failures that have plunged the nation into Stage 6 blackouts.

Sandfish are migratory freshwater fish found only in South Africa that can grow to over half a metre in length. They also act as an umbrella species – protecting them indirectly protects river ecosystems and other species that inhabit them. That’s by virtue of their migratory life cycle: sandfish move over long distances of river at different life stages. To thrive, they need healthy, connected rivers that hold water year-round and don’t harbour alien species.

Gwede Mantashe, the Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy, signed an amendment to schedule 2 (“the schedule”) to the Electricity Regulation Act No. 4 of 2006 (“the Act”) which was Gazetted and came into effect on Friday, 13 August 2021.

The schedule has been welcomed by many, being hailed as a step in the right direction towards allowing the private provision and generation of electricity in South Africa; an opportunity to break Eskom’s monopoly on power production and alleviating some of the nation’s power supply demands.
