World Cancer Day is an international day marked annually on the 4th of February to raise awareness of the global impact of cancer and increase understanding of its prevention, detection, treatment, and care. This day is very significant to DKMS Africa (formerly known as the Sunflower Fund) as the organisation’s main objective is to fight blood cancers and disorders and to meet its target of reaching 35000 blood stem cell donors by the end of 2022.
Guest on the line: Dr Theo Gerdener, Clinical Haematologist at Albert Alberts Stemcell Transplant Centre and Medical Director at DKMS Africa, the South African affiliate of the global DKMS organisation, explains that there are three main types of blood cancer, including leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma.
