“I watched with keen interest the interview of President Mandisa Maya last week. I was particularly interested in her comments concerning the use of our African languages in courts and the need for the development of our languages as languages of record. My interest not only as a South African (who is able to speak isiXhosa) but as a forensic and legal linguist developing the area in SA and the African continent. I together with 2 colleagues have just compiled my PhD research into book form (handbook on Legal Languages) last year addressing these very questions and how we can implement our languages in court’ - Dr Zakeera Docrat

World Cancer Day is an international day marked annually on the 4th of February to raise awareness of the global impact of cancer and increase understanding of its prevention, detection, treatment, and care. This day is very significant to DKMS Africa (formerly known as the Sunflower Fund) as the organisation’s main objective is to fight blood cancers and disorders and to meet its target of reaching 35000 blood stem cell donors by the end of 2022.

The Union has learnt with great concern and sheer exasperation that the cause for the delay and withholding of funding statuses by the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS), is informed by a R9.6 Billion shortfall, confirming previous shortfall forecasts of R10 billion. As we speak, except for a number of SASSA recipients, all students funding decisions have been withheld by NSFAS, these include returning students who had been funded in the previous academic year and first-time applicants. The devastating impact of this, has been that while the children of the rich are registering and taking up already minimal spaces in universities, the children of the poor and working class are waiting destitute on the sidelines
