September 16th marks Blondie Makhene's 66th birthday. If you are a fan of the 1980's music, you must be familiar with Blondie Makhene. He is famous for his unique style of music that has moved masses in South Africa. His way of communicating through music earned him a good number of fans, and he is one of the icons that South Africa is proud of.

We live in a world where most parents are busy and they don’t have time to parent. That is a reality we’re facing. The single parent household is on the increase and we see many parents outsourcing their parenting responsibility. Yes, the nannies do most of the work because mom or dad is busy.

How does one strike a balance or make the child feel cared for? We over compensate and try and go an extra mile to fill the void we think that our children are feeling due to our absence. Leaving home in the early hours of the morning and coming back in the evening can make a parent feel guilty about having spent time away from the children. Teachers union Naptosa says making vaccinations compulsory might build more resistance.

Over 80 percent of staff in the education sector has been vaccinated so far.

"We believe that compulsory vaccinations may not be the right thing at this particular time, we believe it may come but the power of convincing people is far better and I am not only talking about teachers, but I am also talking about generally," said Basil Manuel.

"In education specifically, that is only one side of the argument in vaccinating teachers. We know and Naptosa is unapologetically pro-vaccination, we are saying we must get this done but we believe you breed more resistance by suggesting that it must be compulsory."

School is a key component of our societies. In school, children learn to read and write. And being able to read is meant to help people of all ages to think at a higher level and make their lives better.

Thulani’s story is one of a constant struggle to win, despite the odds. He grew up in poverty in rural KZN near to Newcastle. Initially he could only attend school for the first 6 months of every year as he was required to assist on the farm where his parents worked for the remainder of the year. In an effort to assist him with his education they moved and built a house in Blaauwbosch so that he could attend school. But life was still hard as he would have to rise every morning at 4am for the 9km walk to the local school.  Like many of his generation he left school before he had matriculated to seek work in the city.
