Weird Tales published "The Weaving Shadows" by W.H. Holmes in the March 1923 issue — the magazine's very first issue. Little is known about the author beyond a handful of story credits in The Black Cat, The Black Mask, and Weird Tales between 1922 and 1923; "W.H. Holmes" may even have been a pseudonym.

Occult detective Chet Burke, a Sherlock Holmes–styled investigator who lives with his sister in New York City, is approached by his friend Chief Rhyne of the Rhyne Detective Agency alongside a troubled carpenter named Hayden. Hayden has moved his sister and niece into a remote, decaying house at Sunken Mine, in the Hudson Highlands, and reports being tormented at night by "weaving shadows" — ectoplasmic forms that paralyze him with dread, resolve into two terrible faces, and are followed by blood dripping from empty air above his bed. Burke travels with Hayden to investigate, but events at the isolated house spiral toward tragedy faster than he can piece together their cause. In the aftermath, Burke and the local sheriff discover two centuries-old skeletons sealed inside a hidden, plaster-lined chamber in the attic — the remains of two women, apparently killed by a family member generations earlier. Unlike more triumphant occult-detective tales, Burke fails to fully explain the haunting or prevent further deaths, leaving the story's central mysteries — why the shadows appeared now, and what became of the Hayden women — deliberately unresolved.
