December 2021 marked the 50th anniversary of President Nixon signing the National Cancer Act of 1971.

To celebrate that visionary and transformative bipartisan legislation, the Richard Nixon Foundation hosted the first Nixon National Cancer Conference, a two-day gathering of distinguished Nobel laureates, cancer center directors, clinicians, researchers, and political and public health officials to assess the past, analyze the present, and envision the future of cancer treatment and research.

This episode focuses on the history of the National Cancer Act of 1971 and features highlights from the Nixon National Cancer Conference that took place at the Richard Nixon Presidential Library and Museum.

Fifty years ago today, President Nixon addressed the nation on television to announce “the most comprehensive new economic policy to be undertaken in this nation in four decades.”

Jeffrey Garten, the former dean of the Yale School of Management and Undersecretary of Commerce in the Clinton administration chronicles the August 1971 meeting at Camp David, where President Nixon unilaterally ended the last vestiges of the gold standard—breaking the link between gold and the dollar—transforming the entire global monetary system.
