Gray might be the most common shingle color on the market, but it’s far from the only one. In fact, homeowners have many different colors to choose from when it comes time to replace their roof. But choosing a shingle color is more than just an aesthetic decision; it has practical consequences for your roof as well.
The color you choose for your roof will have a significant effect on how well it absorbs or reflects heat. In hot climates, a light colored shingle can reflect most of the heat of the midday sun and save you money on your energy bills during the summer. Here in New Jersey, a darker color can help to retain heat during the winter and make snow on your roof melt faster.
You might love the idea of having a bright red roof, but not everyone is going to agree with such a bold color choice. If you think you might sell your home within the expected lifespan of your new roof, it’s probably best to err on the side of caution and go with a more conventional color. A new roof can improve your home’s resale value, but only if it’s appealing to prospective buyers.
You may notice that homes rarely have shingles that perfectly match their siding. This is because it’s typically better to choose a contrasting color for your roof that highlights the best features of your home. Pairing white siding with a black roof, for example, can create a classic farmhouse aesthetic for your home. Pairing red brick with a gray shingle is another popular option that many homeowners choose.
Here at Deegan Roofing, we can work with you to find the perfect shingle for your new roof. Get your free estimate online, or give us a call today to learn more.

Are you looking into Nutley roof repair for you home? Freezing ice and snow, strong winds, pounding rain and hot sun all take a beating on your roof. The roof is a home’s first line of defense and is therefore very important to maintain. If you are having noticeable problems with your roof such as leaks, missing shingles or rot, it’s time to take immediate roof repair action to prevent further damage to your home. As you are probably aware, there are different options when it comes to Nutley roof repair: reroofing and roof replacement. reroofing has become well known for being a cheaper alternative to roof replacement. reroofing has the potential to save you money, however, it is not ideal for every situation. As a homeowner, it is important that you understand the difference between reroofing and roof replacement so that you can make informed decisions when you hire a roofing contractor to repair your roof!
Reroofing is a method of repairing an old or worn out roof. It involves layering new shingles on top of the old worn out shingles. This reinforces the strength of the roof and can prevent further damage from occurring. There is no need to remove the old shingles, so the process is much faster then roof replacement which requires tear off. Because it takes less time, reroofing is usually significantly lower in cost than a complete replacement. Although reroofing is an effective solution to you roof repair needs, it can only be done one time. This means that if you already have a double layer of shingles on your roof, this method of Nutley roof repair is not an option for you.
Unlike reroofing, a complete roof replacement requires removing all the old shingles down to the wooden deck below. After the shingles have been completely torn off, new felt paper is applied to the wooden deck and fresh shingles are nailed to the roof. Also unlike reroofing, a replacement can be done regardless of how many layers of shingles are currently on your roof. However, the extra work and time involved in the roof replacement procedure typically make it a more expensive project compared to reroofing.
If your roof is generally in good condition, but is beginning to show significant wear and tear, then reroofing is a good way to go. Minor leaks or a few missing shingles are not a cause to replace the entire roof, but still require your attention. Reroofing is a great way to restore health and longevity to your roof without completely replacing it. As long as there isn’t any serious water damage, a significant amount of missing shingles, or mold overgrowth, reroofing is a great option that will prolong your roof’s lifespan and save you money. Reroofing is usually a good option for preparing a roof for Fall and Winter.
Although it has it’s place in roof repair, sometimes reroofing is not the best route to take. Reroofing doesn’t involve tearing out the old shingles, so there is absolutely no way to know what condition the wooden deck underneath is in. Problems can usually be spotted by looking at the condition of the shingles, however, there are some instances where the wood under the shingles has begun to rot. In this situation, reroofing further conceals a serous problemwithout providing a solution to the damage. This will only cause further damage to your roof and home costing you much more than you would have paid for a complete roof replacement.
Reroofing is also not a good idea if only certain areas of your roof need to be done. Not reroofing the entire roof at once will result in sections of roofing that do not line up properly with one another. The uneveness of the roof is very noticeable and can cause damage to occur to your roof that could have been prevented.
It is also very important to keep in mind that Reroofing can be done only if there is a single layer of shingles on the roof. Although it is not uncommon to come across a roofer who is willing to reroof over multiple layers of shingles, the risk outweighs the potential benefit. When dealing with multiple layers of shingles, the nails used may not be able to penetrate through the layers to hold the newest shingles in place. Additionally, more than one layer of shingles makes it very difficult to detect if there is any damage to the wooden deck underneath. This increases the possibility that a serious problem could go unnoticed. For tips on identifing serious problems, checkout “signs it’s time to replace your roof”
Unlike reroofing, there is never a wrong time for a roof replacement. If there are multiple shingles already on a roof, a replacement should always be done. If there is mold, rot or other damage to the wood under the shingles, a replacement should always be done. Additionally if both the roof the shingles are in bad condition, a replacement is the best option. A replacement allows all problems (both known and unknown) to be solved simultaneously instead of simply covered up by another layer of shingles.
After everything is said and done, there is only a small window of opportunity where reroofing is a worthwhile option. If your roof doesn’t meet that criteria, a replacement will save you more time, money and frustration that reroofing in the long run.

Performing Westfield roof repair or even just figuring out what’s wrong with your roof isn’t a task that most can do by themselves. Here are a few steps to take and things to consider to help prevent further roof damage as well as determine if you are in need of Westfield roof repair services:
Safety: Going out to find a leak as soon as it happens is something that could put you in the hospital or worse. Going up on a roof while it’s raining or covered with ice and snow is a horrible way to find a leak anyway. Trying to temporarily fix a leak could be highly dangerous as well. If you want to do it right, there is no quick-fix. Take your time, and be very patient and careful to wait for weather conditions to become less extreme. If you aren’t very experienced, it’s highly recommended that you hire a professional for Westfield roof repair services
Take the Proper Precautions: Being on a roof will put the body in positions that are not comfortable or safe. Make sure to wear rubber sole shoes to prevent slipping. Also use a harness and always work with a buddy. Wearing a hardhat may be a good idea as well.
Hose Down the Roof – Take a garden hose and go up to the roof and start spraying in different locations to find the leak in need of a Westfield roof repair. Wait if it’s wintertime because it’s not safe to run water on the roof when it’s freezing out.
Keep Gutters Clean – One of the most common areas and causes for roof leaks are clogged gutters. Gutters that have not been cleaned can cause the water to build up during rain and damages may require Westfield roof repair services.
Avoid Dry Rot – Dry rot isn’t related to any type of water damage, but lack of ventilation. If a Westfield roof repair is required right in the middle of the roof, there is a chance that the plywood might be deteriorating. The roof will actually sag in and cause the roof shingles to get brittle, crack and then leak. Preventing dry rot consists of installing a ridge vent, which will only work if there is a soffit vent. Holes have to be drilled through the soffit vents so cool air comes in through the bottom and pushes the hot air out through the top.
Prevent Ice Buildup – In the wintertime, ice has no problem building up under the roof membrane, shingles and gutters. The ice builds back up when it reaches the wall line where the house is heated and it creates an interior drip. Proper ventilation, rain and ice shields along with installing a drip edge will help prevent this problem.
Fix Roof Boots – Flashing, roofing, ice dams, and skylights are all obvious places for potential leaks. One thing people often miss is the rubber boots. It’s where the roof fence comes up that you find roof boots. If they dry up they will cause major leaks. Purchase a new roof boot in a local hardware store. You may have to remove some of the shingles, lay a better tar under it and put it back in place.
Inspect Materials – Sometimes shingles are faulty and will begin to crack after they’ve been nailed down. Faulty installation with nails and shingles can also play a big part in leaks. Nails could be nailed too low and it will start pushing back up. Make sure to always check merchandise before getting on the roof. If they were installed poorly, Westfield roof repair services may be a good idea.
Let’s reiterate here: Unless you have A LOT of experience with roofing, DO NOT attempt the Westfield roof repair on your own. Hiring a professional and reputable roofer will not only prevent you from getting injured, but also will get the job done right the first time.

Solar energy is growing in popularity across America, with about one million homes reported to have solar panels installed in 2016. The typical solar panel vendor would come out to your home and install solar panels on top of your existing roof, but Elon Musk’s company Solar City wants to change that. They are in the process of developing a light-sensitive roofing material that would completely replace a traditional roof.
Solar City calls the product “solar shingles,” and its goal is to install these shingles on five million American homes in the coming months and years. According to Popular Mechanics, Solar City’s reasons for creating this product stem from the limited lifespans of conventional shingles. About five million roofs need to be replaced or repaired each year, so for Solar City, it didn’t make sense to create a product that would be installed on top of a roof that would eventually need to be replaced. Instead of adding their product to existing rooftops, they are creating their own energy-efficient roofing material.
For their product to be adopted by mainstream America, the shingles would have to be produced for about the same price as conventional shingles. Or, to account for the increased price tag, they’d have to be considerably sturdier, in addition to the added value of providing solar energy to the household. Plus, they’d have to account for installation, maintenance and upkeep costs.
Solar City is currently in the process of merging with Tesla, another one of Musk’s many enterprises, but there’s still no projection as to when these solar shingles could hit the market. We may be a bit skeptical of their staying power and mainstream appeal—solar shingles sound expensive, and they may not hold up as well as asphalt shingles to weather and general wear and tear – but for now we’ll be keeping an eye on the development of this interesting product.
For advice on how to care for your regular old roof, stay tuned for more updates from our blog and check out our tips and FAQs here.

When it comes to roof shingles, there are a plenty of different options on the market, but the two most popular options are asphalt three tab shingles and architectural shingles. If you’re not quite sure what the differences are between the two, not to worry – Deegan Roofing is here to break it down for you.
Three tab shingles lay flat against each other. Think of three tab shingles being laid on your roof like you would lay tile on the floor of your kitchen. Architectural shingles are called “architectural” because they have a more pronounced shape. Instead of the shingles lying flat against the roof, they are layered on top of each other so that the shingles create a three-dimensional shape that adds dimension to the roof.
There’s some debate as to whether three tab shingles can withstand high winds as well as architectural shingles. In general, architectural shingles are favored for their added strength and durability. Architectural shingles will typically last about 25 to 30 years, but if three tab shingles are installed properly they can last for at least 20 years as well.
Three tab shingles are typically somewhat less expensive than architectural shingles. The installation process is a little less involved, and you’ll need less material at the end of the day to cover the roof. In spite of the cost savings, many homeowners prefer the durability and aesthetics of architectural shingles, so if you’re hoping to increase the value of your home, it might be worth a bit of extra money to go with the architectural shingles.

Getting your home ready for the fall and winter seasons doesn’t just mean pulling the heavy clothes and blankets out of storage bins. There are also a few things you should take care of outside, particularly on the roof, before the warm weather rolls out for good. To make sure that your roof survives the winter intact and keeps you and your family safe and dry, you’ll need to do a few basic maintenance steps before the first snow of the season.
Any debris that collected throughout the summer should be removed before the fall and winter. If you have lots of trees near your house, you should clean the gutters once more after the leaves have fallen before the first snow hits.
Clogged gutters can prevent the drainage systems on your roof from working properly, which can lead to water damage, rot and hefty repair costs, especially when you’re dealing with snow and freezing rain. Snow that remains on your roof for a long time can do significant damage to the structure of your home if your gutters aren’t allowing the snow to melt and drain off properly.
While you’re up there clearing out the gutters, if you see spots that need attention, make repairs. It’s better to make small repairs now rather than wait for serious damage after harsh weather that could end up costing a lot more money.
If you’re unsure of this, the experts and Deegan Roofing can help you out. If your attic isn’t ventilated properly, hot air can become trapped up there, which will cause snow at the top of your roof to melt faster than the snow at the edges of your roof and create ice dams. This can cause serious water and structural damage to the edges of your roof, plus, you’ll end up paying more on energy bills for your home.
Deegan Roofing does it all, so if you’re not sure where to start to prep your roof for the winter months, check out a list of our services, or contact us today to make an appointment. the summer will be behind us before we know it, so don’t wait!

As much as we might hate to admit it, home improvement can get pretty messy. More often than not, you have to make that mess before you can put things back in order again. If you’ve got a big project coming up, you might be wondering what to do with all the waste it’s going to generate. Most trash pickup services will only accept small volumes of waste that can fit in a trashcan. For everything else, you’ll either have to take it to a landfill yourself or call in the professionals. By renting a dumpster, however, you can get plenty of room for all your trash without having to worry about carting it away once you’re done. Today we’ll look at four of the most common reasons that people choose to rent dumpsters.
No matter how much time you spend tidying up your yard, it’s not going to look much better with a big heap of dead branches and other organic material sitting on your front lawn. Why not put it all in a dumpster and let someone else haul it away for you?
Whether you’re gutting a bathroom, installing new flooring or remodeling a kitchen, chances are you’re going to have some serious debris on your hands. Rather than take carload after carload of waste to your local landfill, a dumpster should provide you with more than enough space for all that debris.
A move is a great opportunity to cut clutter and get rid of all the things you don’t need around anymore. In fact, you might be surprised at just how much stuff you can stand to throw out during a move. A dumpster is ideal for the great purge before you move.
Roofing is a dirty job. Before you can get a fresh new roof on your house, you’ve got to tear the old one down. There aren’t too many trash cans that can fit an entire roof, but a dumpster is perfect for the job.
The best part about renting a dumpster is that once you’re done, we’ll come take your trash away for you! Give us a call today to learn about this or any of the other services we offer at Deegan!

Over the years, we’ve met our fair share of well-intentioned homeowners who’ve accidentally damaged their roofs by attempting DIY maintenance and repairs. Roof maintenance is important, but if you’re not careful you can wind up doing more harm than good. Today we’ll take a look at a few of the most common examples of roof maintenance errors so you don’t have to make these costly mistakes yourself.
Using a pressure washer to clean debris off your roof might seem like a good idea, but unfortunately these machines are typically a little too powerful for roof cleaning. In addition to knocking debris off your roof, pressure washers can also wear away the shingle granules that make your roof waterproof.
If you notice a leak in your home, don’t look for it by climbing onto the roof and pulling up shingles. You’re unlikely to find the leak this way, and chances are you’ll wind up exacerbating the problem rather than fixing it.
Gutters and downspouts – which are designed to drain moisture safely away from your home – are essential components of your roof. When rainfall accumulates in gutters rather than draining away it can promote mold and mildew growth on your roof, damaging shingles and increasing the likelihood of leaks. As a general rule, you should clean your gutters at least twice a year.
When tree branches are allowed to grow over your home, strong winds and rainstorms can cause organic debris to fall and accumulate on the roof. In some cases, falling debris can cause impact damage to shingles. In others, accumulated organic material can hold moisture and foster mold growth on the roof.
To avoid unnecessary wear and tear, your roof should see as little foot traffic as possible. Walking on a roof can not only damage shingles, but also put you at risk of injury as well. Try to inspect your roof for damage from a distance whenever you can. If you do need to walk on your roof, it’s probably time to call in the pros.

This time of year, when temperatures and humidity levels rise, you may start to notice some unwanted guests on your roof. Green sprouts of moss and black streaks of algae are fairly common nuisances during the summer. While algae stains are mostly a superficial concern for homeowners, moss growth can actually shorten the lifespan of asphalt shingles. The good news is that there are a few simple things every homeowner can do to remove mold and algae from their roof and prevent it from growing back in the future.
To remove moss, start by using a stiff nylon bristle brush to gently scrub the growth free from your roof. You can attach the brush to a pole to access hard-to-reach areas. Be careful to scrub downwards to avoid accidentally damage shingles in the process. Because the root systems on the moss are fairly shallow, it shouldn’t take much effort to remove manually.
To remove algae streaks, you can use a gentle solution of oxygen bleach and water applied with a sprayer attachment for a garden hose. It’s important to use oxygen bleach rather than chlorine bleach to protect the original color of your roof shingles. Simply spray the solution onto the roof, preferably when it’s relatively cool, and then scrub it gently to remove residual algae.
To prevent future moss and algae growth, you can insert a 6-inch wide strip of copper under the row of shingles closest to the peak of your roof. Leave about two inches exposed beyond the shingles. This way, rain water will wash the metal molecules from the copper down the roof, killing any moss and algae they come in contact with.

Choosing the right siding for your home is a difficult choice. At Deegan Roofing, Siding, Gutters and Mold Remediation, we help homeowners pick and install the right siding for their home every day, but there are a lot of options for owners to consider. The right siding can accentuate a home’s architecture and increase the value of a home, so let’s look at some of the top choices.
Wood siding provides great warmth and workability, making it a great choice for renovation projects. Picking the right wood siding depends on how you plan to finish the siding. Using a clear sealer or semi-transparent stain highlights the grain, but you’ll need to pick more expensive grades of wood that are free of knots and blemishes.
Wood is also easy to work with and provides lots of options for cutting to fit. Architects and designers often choose wood to give a home a real natural beauty, and they prize it for its adaptability and resilience.
Vinyl siding is great for families with kids or places that see temperature extremes or heavy winds. Since the color is evenly spread throughout the material, little nicks and scratches don’t show up as easily. Modern manufacturing techniques also create products that do a great job of mimicking wood-grain lap siding, shingles or even stone, meaning that you can re-create the look of other materials easily with vinyl.
Vinyl is a versatile material and is a popular retrofitting option. It is also incredibly strong and requires little to no maintenance and, best of all, never needs repainting. Most brands offer lifetime warranties, as well, in case you do run into a problem down the road.
Fiber cement is a very trendy pick right now. Fiber cement is stable and requires very little maintenance. Made from a mix of wood pulp, cement, clay and sand, this material can be molded to mimic wood, shingles, stucco and masonry. Fiber cement also readily accepts paint, making it easy to change the look of a home with a few fresh coats. On top of that, it is fire-resistant, termite-proof and won’t rot, so it provides a durable option for homeowners.
If you’re in the market for new siding at your home, give Deegan Roofing, Siding, Gutters and Mold Remediation a call today. Our experts can help you select the right look for your home and work with you to find the siding material that fits with you aesthetic preferences and your budget.
