In this mix semba, kazukuta, kuduro, tarraxo and many more styles coming from the musseques (shantytowns) of Luanda and the outskirts of Lisbon join forces to dismantle the colonialist and lusotropicalist agenda of the central fado song, for which Angola “will always be Portugal”. While aiming to make people dance frantically on dusty grounds as well as on the hot asphalt of the suburbs, this non-chronological stream of words, chants, guitar riffs, drum patterns and electronic beats is a declaration of independence, self-construction, identity and freedom.

Suerta (Bruno Rana) is a NJR resident DJ and radio host based in London, UK. He holds a Master of Arts degree in Music (Ethnomusicology) at Goldsmiths – University of London, graduating with a dissertation on the influence of Angolan music in Lisbon’s electronic dance music scene (“Luso-Sonic Lisbon: the Angolan Roots of Electronic Dance Music made in the City’s Peripheral Areas”)
