Joel DeSelm continues his teaching on the Holy Spirit on Sunday night of Fanning the Flame.
Joel Deselm kicks off Fanning the Flame with this Sunday morning message about being led by the Spirit through our Samaria.
Galatians 5:22-23—Faithfulness, gentleness and self-control wrap up our breakdown of the fruit of the Spirit. Is there evidence of this fruit in our lives? Are we in step with the Spirit?
Galatians 5:22-23—Paul gives us a great checklist of virtues that should flow from our lives when we are keeping in step with the Holy Spirit. He calls them “the fruit of the Spirit.” If we want to gauge the level at which we are keeping in step, we need to understand what these fruit look like and then take time to evaluate their presence in our lives.
Galatians 5:16-26—Do you know the voice of the Holy Spirit? Do you listen to the Spirit? “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.” –John 10:27 Among the cacophony of voices; we have to be able to distinguish the Spirit’s voice in order to stay IN STEP.
Galatians 5:16-26, Romans 6-8—Great rivalries often imply two nearly equal entities competing against each other. In the spiritual realm, that’s often described as Satan versus Jesus, light versus darkness, or the flesh versus the spirit. Because of this intense battle, most Christians fail to realize the decisive victory that is ours through Christ. Instead of standing tall as a victor, many limp to the finish line crippled by the enemy’s attack. That’s not God’s plan. That need never be our path.
Galatians 5:16-18—Great rivalries have opposing thoughts, styles or strategies. They often have loyal fan bases. The greatest rivalries have a long history of tense face-offs. When it comes to keeping our lives in step with the Spirit, there is a great rival we need to know about and know how to find victory over.
Galatians 5:25, John 14-16—Most people have a decent understanding of who God is. The person of Jesus, His life, and ministry here on earth is well documented. Yet the person of the Holy Spirit is often the hidden member of the Trinity. To many, His work and role is a mystery. It’s impossible for us to stay in step with the Spirit if we don’t know the Spirit. So just who is this One that we are to stay in step with?
Galatians 5:25—While our desire is to always keep in step with the Spirit (Galatians 5:25), it’s easy to get out of step. Life has a way of pressing in on us. Instead of keeping in step, we often find ourselves marching to the beat of a different drummer. There is a way back! There is a way to be restored! We don’t have to live in despair and hopelessness but can enjoy the beauty of keeping in step with the Spirit.
Galatians 5:25—Have you made any New Year’s resolutions? Are there any areas of your life where you are committed to change? Do you have a Bible verse for this year? Are there things in your walk with the Lord you want to see enhanced and improved? Learning to live in step with the Spirit isn’t a New Year’s resolution as much as a lifestyle change. We can have amazing spiritual growth and change when we live in step with the Holy Spirit.
