An ex-con struggles to adjust to life outside prison walls
After eight years spent locked up, Max has gotten very good at being a prisoner. He knows the guards, the inmates, and how to survive. But the parole board has decided that he has sufficiently reformed, and its time for him to say goodbye. When Max reaches the outside world, he finds that freedom doesnt make anything easier.
Based on his own experiences in prison, Edward Bunker first drafted No Beast So Fierce in the 1950s, while incarcerated in San Quentin State Prison. He spent the next two decades in and out of jail, writing essays for various magazines and working on the novel, which was finally published in 1973. Eighteen months later, the book was used as evidence that he was fit to leave jail. He received parole, and spent the rest of his life a free man.

Incredible Book by Amazing Author
This novel brings readers into the world of people who, like the author, end up in prison. Having read about the author, Edward Bunker, it is astonishing what he achieved despite all the hardships throughout his life.
Bunker clearly is (or, rather, became) a skilled writer. Apparently he based this novel on his own life so that it is semi-autobiographical. For those who are unfamiliar with his type of life, it is disturbing but it is very real. We do need to know about it, and through this novel we can feel it as well as know intellectually.
Edward Bunker writes from experience
I was familiar with Edward Bunker from reading a previous book, "Education of a Felon", and wanted to explore some of his other works. No Beast So Fierce was a good read. Not too long, not too short. A good look into the mind and lifestyle of a criminal struggling with release from a lengthy incarceration, and the transition to "freedom", with the ankle chain of parole still firmly attached. It is worth noting that parole & probation are better than prison, but still present a host of problems and restrictions that make adjusting back to society even more difficult. Its supposed to help you transition, not impede your progress as so many PO's do. The book shows the struggles of trying to go straight, but being caught between a rock and hard place, of not having any "real world" skills, where your only "skills" are only valued in a underground society, in the criminal subculture, and in prison. The character Max Dembo, analyzes all these things and more, as he goes on one last adventure after giving up on "square" life, and accepting himself for what he is, even embracing it. Truly an excellent book. I'll be getting the rest of his books as well.
Captivating
Have never read a story written in the first person by a career criminal. This was so well written I came to the conclusion it might actually be true. Engrossing, exciting and gritty; all in all a good read.
Authentic crime fiction
Very realistic crime story and basis for the film "Short Time". The author was a real criminal for years and he makes it believable. I will read all of Bunker's other works!
One of the best reads I have been lucky to find
I really enjoyed this book. I was able to relate to the story. the writing is great, flows really well, and the ending does not disappoint.
