In a match that was certainly heated, cooler heads did not prevail for Phoenix Rising as they fell 2-1 to New Mexico United in the 3rd round of the U.S. Open Cup.

Rising was the more dominant team in possession. Yet, it didn’t translate to meaningful offensive chances as the team was outmatched by New Mexico in nearly every statistical category. The dam broke in the 42nd minute as former Phoenix striker Greg Hurst put United in front. Then, just before halftime struck, Baboucarr Njie was sent off as Rising suddenly faced the situation of going into halftime down a goal and down a man.

With a numbers disadvantage in the second half, Rising seemed to shore up their defense a bit as they stifled New Mexico’s challenges in the early going of the second half. Rising finally found the equalizer through an unsuspecting free kick engineered from Manuel Arteaga. After the shot went off the woodwork, Mr. Open Cup Carlos Harvey put the loose ball in the back of the net.

The Rising comeback was short lived as New Mexico scored their second, and ultimately decisive, goal in the 87th minute with Josh Dolling hammering it home. Rising scuffed a golden opportunity late in the match with Arteaga skying a golden opportunity deep into stoppage time. The match ended with Rising rueing their lack of offensive gile.
