In general, I think we have an erroneous idea on this planet about what it means to give of ourselves and how to relate to others with whom we are in some kind of relationship, no matter whether it is a friendship, a relationship with a co-worker or an intimate relationship or some other kind. We often imagine the sacrificing of our own needs for the sake of the other to be the ultimate form of love. After all, that is what Christianity has taught so many of us with the figure of Jesus supposedly giving up his life so that we may live. But in any such illogical sacrifice we necessarily forfeit our own self-love and self-respect. Why should our care of ourselves be less than that of another? Are we actually less than that other human being?
I often find myself thinking about the Christian admonition to ‘serve God’ and how good Christians ‘serve others’ without thinking of themselves; meekness and mildness and personal sacrifice being Christian virtues. But it’s clear to me now that this is an illogical act without any self-respect. In his book, ‘Gesetze und Gebote des Verhaltens, Probleme des Lebens meistern’ (‘Laws and Recommendations of Behaviour, Mastering Problems of Life’), Billy deals with the topic of how sacrifice in a relationship does not build the relationship up but is destructive and makes us dependent. It doesn’t allow a true giving and a true love. It doesn’t allow the necessary being true and honest regarding ourselves. He writes that we must apply ourselves fully to ourselves. I take this as meaning that we must fully respect ourselves which means that we must recognise and honour what we are and tend to that. After all, why wouldn’t we, given that we are all
creations of Creation?
