You want to be a leader but you're not being seen.
It can be so frustrating when you feel like you are ready for that next level and are working hard doing all the right things - as well as being a great employee and being 110% committed to your job (maybe a little too much at times) you always get results.
You get projects done. You make things happen in fact it’s in your blood to make sure problems are solved at work for your colleagues, for senior management, for the board and for the bottom line. You work as hard as if you owned the company yourself and deeply care about it.
Yet you are not getting the recognition you deserve.
When I support women to be more visible I use the cyclical RISE framework.
Are you really doing what is required to get noticed and get your seat at the table?
Because let's face it we need so many more women to own their expertise and secure more of the decision making positions to help drive businesses forward. Women bring so much diversity. So are you? If you want to do more then get in touch as I can support you to step into your spotlight. Book a call with me link below.

Time to Lean In Rather Than Backing Out
It’s absolutely amazing to have Lauren V Davis from Lauren V Davis Creative and The Business Event Playbook on the podcast today. I’m an avid listener to Lauren’s podcast myself and am so glad that I can share with you how inspirational Lauren has been in the entrepreneurial space.
Lauren is sharing her thoughts on why she would love to see more women in positions of leadership, why it is so important to take those opportunities when they are presented to you and why it is crucial to have a personal brand which really reflects who you are and what you represent.
‘Your personal brand is what you’re known for, how people experience what makes you uniquely you.’ – Lauren
‘It’s really important to build connections.’ – Gemma
‘The more people who believe and trust in who you are as a person, the more those relationships convert into sales and into a great business where you feel fulfilled.’ – Lauren
‘I think it’s really important to find people who inspire you.’ – Gemma
"One day waking up saying oh my gosh I'm speaking I've got a podcast and I'm doing all the things I never thought I would do and that comes from leaning in" - Gemma
‘It’s the power you have inside you which influences the people around you.’ - Lauren
An entrepreneur from an early age recognising the impact that hard work made, Lauren has had an incredible journey. She recognised a genuine love of branding, strategy and marketing when she started her first venture as a small business owner.
Lauren Davis lives in Rockford Illinois and works with people over the world to overcome their personal branding discontent and grow their presence so that they can focus on sales, exposure, leadership and community impact through her marketing consultancy Lauren Davis Creative and her podcast, the Business EventPlaybook.
Lauren's natural and undying passion revolves around taking new learning opportunities, travelling the globe and networking at conferences and workshops in order that she can better serve her clients. As she says, she loves to improve, loves to impress and loves to give everyone she works with 100%.

How to raise your profile whilst working remotely.
With the majority of people working remotely right now due to the impact of Covid19 your visibility plans are out of the window. However you might feel, one thing that is for sure being visible is still, if not more, important than it was before Covid19.
There are spaces to join my 12 month 1-1 No More Hiding Coaching Programme in July - Kathryn has been a part of it for the last 6 months:
"I've been working with Gemma since the start of the year We have formal sessions once a month to talk through problems, set goals, make plans, and understand some of the things that are holding me back. In between these sessions we're also in regular contact through Facebook and Voxer to help keep me accountable, making sure I'm focusing on the right things, the things that will get me to where I want to be, which for me are often the things that I don't do. Not with Gemma around, she's a bit like the good angel sitting on my shoulder, whispering in my ear to be more visible. I definitely wouldn't have achieved the things I have this year without her coaching and this programme" (Kathryn Wellum Kent June 2020)
If you are ambitious and want that next level don't put it off. Being visible is ultimately about building the RIGHT relationships and connections. This is the absolute cornerstone to career progression and business development.
So whether you think this is important or not let me tell you that giving some thought to building your own self promotion strategy is crucial to getting ahead. And the other brilliant thing about this, is that feeling of having some control over what's happening right now.
We chat about the different types of personalities when it comes to being visible:
> ABI the AVOIDER
> CATHY the CHATTERBOX
> DEBBIE the DRAINER
> PIPPA the PLEASER
You might not relate to any of these or you might notice a mixture depending on how you feel that day. The point is that we can sometimes feel like we ARE being visible and doing it right - but the WAY you get noticed is just as important as being visible in the first place.
I also share some ways you can still network, raise your profile and build important connections whilst working remotely.
I would love to know if you have a go at any of these strategies we have chatted about - drop me an email and let me know [email protected] I really do love an action taker!
The thing is that ultimately when it comes to raising your profile the key is to see how you can help others first, as Michelle Obama said “Success isn't about how much money you make, it’s about the difference you make in other people's lives”
“Don't be afraid to re connect with people you haven't been in touch with recently”
“I often say to clients to see LinkedIn as an event you are attending - who do you really want to connect with?”
“Remember all connections and relationships are valuable. You never know who knows who.”
“Being visible is ultimately about building the RIGHT relationships and connections. This is the absolute cornerstone to career progression and business development.”

What do you need to lead?
On today’s episode we talk about a number of things:
Mark Gilroy is Managing Director of TMS Development International Ltd, a leading global provider of psychometric development tools designed to create and sustain high performing teams. Mark has a background in occupational psychology, and has been working in the L&D arena as an executive coach and team development facilitator for over a decade.
“We all care that people would like us, we want to belong and we want to be involved” (Mark Gilroy)
“But you can shake off this feeling that you need to behave in a certain way in order to impress people” (Mark Gilroy)
“Managers who feel they need to present a particular face” (Mark Gilroy)
“She told me that she felt that she had to wear a mask everyday to work” (Gemma Stow)
“The environment must make her feel like that so there's so work to do there in that company but the other is that she has to pretend to be someone she is not every day” (Gemma Stow)
“How do we get to that point of feeling so comfortable with ourselves knowing that’s enough that's good enough”
“For a number of years I have been quite comfortable to go out on my own and that feels good to me but there was a time it didn't” (Gemma Stow)
“These are the fears that stop them from being more visible” (Gemma Stow)
“This is how I lead and this is what I need” (Gemma Stow)
“For a lot of people there is an archetype of what leadership looks like” (Mark Gilroy)

Actions are the loudest voice.
It can be hard to feel like you are using your voice. Sharing your opinions. Knowing what to say. Worrying if it will be seen as right or wrong.
Especially right now. The global anti racism protests that have been triggered by George Floyd’s horrendous death. I know many of my friends and family feel like they need to show the world that they care and that they stand by their black sisters and brothers across the world, yet hold back from fear of saying the wrong thing. I know this because I have had replies to emails I have sent about this very thing.
There's an amazing article written by Natalie Morris for the metro > https://metro.co.uk/2020/06/01/white-people-why-vital-speak-racism-even-scared-12786718/
I will be honest - I felt like I didn't have the right words. Worrying that it wouldn't come across right. That I couldn't articulate what I wanted to say Like “who am I to have an opinion as a white woman who cannot understand” and has been extended many privileges in different shapes and forms because of how I look. I am doing a lot of reflection.
This may be true for you in many areas of your life. On this show we focus on being more visible and to stop hiding so you can grow and learn and have the work you love and have the career you want. But that doesn't mean you have to be the loudest in the room to get that.
“Your actions are your loudest voice”
It is about being genuine. Genuine action. and this can look different for different people.
Your way forward won’t be the same as other people's ways forward.
You have to decide what that looks like. And to do it for the right reasons. Not because everyone else is doing that so you will too.
Abi Adamson, a woman I don’t even known had a massive impact on me when she was talking about how organisations need to do things differently and her own experiences as a black woman - here is the video > https://www.linkedin.com/posts/activity-6674257575455924224-rNua
Don’t sit there over thinking and planning all the time. Do something today and then do something the next day.
Find your own way of using your voice. It doesn't have to be in everyone's face and you don’t have to do it to get more ‘likes’ on a post.
“This is about the internal work so that you can be there fully for others externally.”
If this is something that you know you want to do more of then reach out to me - depending on where you are at and what you want I may be able to help or I can definitely signpost you to some amazing people and resources..
I would love to hear from you - what action will you take - what does that look like for you? Let me know.

Self promotion is not a dirty word!
On today’s show we are talking all about how important it is to wave your flag. I talk about the impact of not promoting yourself and what that could mean for you and your career. But more importantly I chat about what happens when you do.
Quotes from Gemma Stow:
“Reading around the research it’s fascinating to see all the different ways that women hold back and underestimate themselves”
“Leaning in to what we really want”
“Women underestimating their capabilities”
“If we don’t self promote what’s the impact?”
“From an early age we are told to work hard. Head down, keep going and that's how you get success”
“Yes you have to be good at your job - but also you have to be telling people about your results”
“If you don't self promote you are going to miss out on opportunities”
“Don’t be overlooked for the next best opportunity”
“What is it you really want? Is not the easiest question to answer”
“What happens when you choose visibility?”
“She's playing to her strengths to be more visible to those that matter”
“Do people know about you?”
“Women often assume they will get noticed”
“What do other people say about you and your qualities - ask them”
“Start within your comfort zone and get small wins first”
“We want to see you - the real you”

“Some people think it’s just not me - I don’t want to go to networking, be visible or put my face out there” (Gemma Stow)
“And the I had this mindshift it’s not about me it's about helping other people...and we do have to put ourselves out there and you are missing a trick if you are not” (Sandra Greenbank)

No More Hiding - What is it all about?
Welcome to the new look of this podcast. The biggest change is not only the name but the topics that we will be discussing. And I wanted to share with you what you can expect from tuning in to the show.
No More Hiding is exactly that. It’s a show to empower women to step into their own spotlight. Use their voice. Be seen and be heard. And get comfortable with the uncomfortable.
I am Gemma Stow, your self promotion expert, coach and workshop facilitator.
Too often I have worked with women who have been holding back from showing off their talents. Sometimes they know it. Sometimes they don’t.
I’ve also been that woman too. It wasn’t that long ago that I realised I had been hiding. I’m a proud introvert yet this resulted in me finding ways to avoid what I knew I should have been doing. Hiding in different ways but I knew I was made for more.
By holding back women are missing out on important opportunities that could really skyrocket their careers.
One of the biggest challenges that comes up for women is the idea of self promotion. The research tells us that there is a gender gap when it comes to women owning their expertise and showcasing it to those that matter.
I hear things like
“It feels uncomfortable”
“I feel like a big show off”
“I hate being the centre of attention”
“I don’t want others to think I love myself”
Time and time again women are overlooked because they don’t share their opinions and ideas in meetings. They miss out on the promotion because they undervalue themselves. And they don’t get to that next level because they aren’t visible enough.
They continue to work really hard and hope and pray that they will get noticed. They want to be recognised and rewarded for the effort and value they bring to the table. Yet it’s not happening. And the gap is still there.
I see this as a dual responsibility. Yes companies have to look after their employees. Make sure that the environment is one in which is inclusive and they can thrive. But there’s also a part that women have to play.
The increasing pressure on companies with the gender gap statistics on display is something that can be addressed with self promotion.
Supporting women to start showcasing their talents. Through coaching, mentoring, training and development but most of all redefining what self promotion means. Companies need women to step up too.
It’s definitely not about being the loudest in the room although we all know some who think it is. But it’s more about women figuring out what their natural strengths are combined with their values and passions.
Knowing that what you have to offer is way more than you think.
Women often undervalue their expertise and talk themselves out of saying yes to new opportunities. Convincing themselves they need more skills, experience or even qualifications. It’s also not necessarily connected to confidence. It’s about self belief and feeling enough and often those societal norms and ways we are expected to behave can get in the way.
This show is all about giving you permission , should you need it, to go out there and show the world what you’ve got. No more undervaluing. No more passing up the praise and definitely no more hiding.
I share my thoughts and learnings around this subject and interview some incredible guests from HR professionals to business owners to equality and inclusion leaders and those in education.
Self promotion is not a dirty word and it’s time we all started waving our flags.
Let me know how much you enjoy the show by leaving a quick review. It really does mean that even more people can find the show and benefit from the conversations too.
And if you know you are avoiding self promotion or you are in a position to support your female colleagues to embrace it, then why not book a chat with me, I come alive when I'm helping women step forward and the results show that they come alive too. The link is below.
Thanks for tuning in .... Until next time
