No Rest for the Weekend's Yasin Lago and Jason Godbey review episode 5 of Lanterns starring Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre. The car ignites into flames while newly revealed Manhunter, Zoe idly watches the horrendous event. Although, she does rescue him from a possible death sentence from severe burns. Her regenerative technology, including blood, is used to quicken the healing of the Lantern trainee, while also providing some background on her story up to now. Chief among them the deal made with the Town and finally confessing the events that would lead to Abin Sur’s execution. In the meantime, Hal is off to save the day. He checks in with his previous downloaded incarnation for a much needed news update before all Hell breaks loose. Rushville instantly becomes ground zero, first by the alien hit squad with their sights on eliminating their age old enemy. A temporary truce is made for a long coming shakedown with Will Macon and his militia on the compound. The head-on assault ultimately overwhelms both sides of the fight, exposing the former relationship of Antaan and the Manhunter. By the end of the battle, Hal stood victorious until the ring needed charging following an aerial attack from weaponized satellites previously discovered in orbit that obliterated much of the town. When he reaches the battery at the motel, John and Hal get into a street brawl in the room. By the end, the Manhunter, Will Macon, Antaan, Hal Jordan and quite possibly John Stewart will all be toppled from their positions. We lost quite a few characters in this week’s episode. A conflict that was building from the beginning of the show finally comes to a deadly confrontation. The results and consequences to be determined more extensively on forthcoming episodes. As of now, the futures of both John Stewart and Hal Jordan, yes even after supposed death, are now more uncertain than ever.

Initiated by the mysterious alien committee the Guardians of the Universe, each sector of deep space is regulated by one specially selected peacekeeper empowered with green-energy manifested by willpower and duty, through a ring that is to be routinely charged using the lantern bestowed to only the Green Lantern Corps members. Now, somewhere along the highways of the American heartland, the mentor and apprenticeship of the next to join the Corps to protect Earth’s location within Sector 2814 has begun. This is DC Studios’ Lanterns.Creators Tom King and Damon Lindelof (Lost, Watchmen) have developed a great True Detective influenced police procedural wrapped in comic book authentication. Writers Vanessa Baden, Justin Britt-Gibson, Breannah Gibson and Christopher Cantwell all contribute to a larger narrative from out of the murder mysteries to be solved with character details and story turns that keeps the plot riveting and the audience riveted. Together with Chris Mundy (Ozark) doing double duty as showrunner and executive producer, Lanterns is currently exceeding expectations due to the writing, but mostly because of the fantastic chemistry and character relatability between Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre. They are what is ultimately going to make this a hit series or a flop. So far, Lanterns are shining quite brightly.
On this episode we look back at some films you may have missed this summer including: Passenger, Masters of the Universe, and Disclosure Day.
