Argentina, the autumn of 1933. A letter arrives complaining that South America is too large, and three weeks later Arthur is standing on a platform in Buenos Aires, watching the Belgian Detective step off a train with the air of a man who has found defects in an entire republic.
They travel out across the pampas — flat to every horizon, cattle like dark islands on a green sea — to Estancia Santa Emilia, a long pale house among the eucalyptus trees, where a Flemish shipping magnate has come to do business with Don Alejandro de Arriaga: sixty-five, silver-haired, owner of thirty thousand hectares and of strong opinions about politicians, bankers, bishops and dentists.
The family gathers for dinner. A wife whose beauty has hardened rather than faded. Two sons who could not be less alike. A widowed aunt with a silver-topped cane who distrusts foreigners, and Belgians particularly. And at the top of the staircase, the portrait of a laughing girl of seventeen: Emilia, who died in Europe twelve years ago, of an illness nobody in the house can quite name.
Her bedroom has been kept locked, exactly as she left it. But the keyhole is free of dust — and at midnight, there is a strip of yellow light beneath the door.
By nine the next morning, Don Alejandro's horse has come home without him.
The Belgian Detective has come to Argentina on business that is not his own. He is about to discover that in this house, the dead are kept very carefully indeed.

💬 QUESTION FOR THE COMMENTS
A room kept a little too perfectly, a light that vanishes when you knock, and a family that cannot remember what killed its own daughter. When did you first doubt that the woman upstairs was Emilia? 🕵️
